Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas — The No. 35 Haverford College women's tennis team (1-0) secured a 5-2 victory over Southwestern (3-4) on Tuesday evening on the Henderson Courts, using a strong showing in doubles play and three singles wins to clinch the match.
The Scarlet and Black opened the afternoon by claiming two of the three doubles contests to take the early advantage. In the quickest match of the doubles slate, Mallika Reddy and Aarti Prochnow delivered a decisive 6-1 victory over Kimberly Duncan and Addison Powell at third doubles. Southwestern answered at the top spot as Isabella Cepeda and Daryl Locke edged Jolie Zink and Adelaide Kreutel, 6-4. The Fords secured the crucial doubles point in the final match to finish when Natalia Chapa and Abhishree Menon defeated Lilly Perkins and Katia Childs, 6-4, at second doubles to give the Fords a 1-0 lead.
In singles competition, Southwestern evened the match at 1-1 as Duncan defeated Kreutel, 6-2, 6-1, on court number three. Haverford responded with a straight-set win from Erika Phanord at fifth singles, where she topped Childs, 6-4, 6-2, to restore the lead at 2-1.
The Fords added another point at the top of the lineup as Zink rallied past Cepeda in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, at first singles, before the Pirates picked up its second singles win when Perkins defeated Sophie Capone, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), on court four to trim the visitor's lead down to 3-2
However, Haverford sealed the team victory with a pair of three-set triumphs late in the match. Sriya Krishnan outlasted Powell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, at sixth singles before Prochnow closed the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Locke at second singles to cap the 5-2 result for the Fords.
The Scarlet and Black will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10, taking on No. 12 Trinity at 9 a.m. CT.
