Box Score 1 SAN ANTONIO and TEMPLE, Texas – The No. 35 Haverford College women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Texas with a pair of victories on Wednesday, defeating No. 40 Skidmore, 6-1, before powering past Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-2. With the two wins, the Fords improve to 3-1 on the young season.
No. 35 Haverford 6, No. 40 Skidmore 1
Skidmore claimed the early edge after taking the doubles point despite a strong start from the Fords. Natalia Chapa and Abhi Menon opened doubles play with a convincing 6-1 victory over Mia Rosenberg and Ruth Wilson at No. 2 doubles.
The Thoroughbreds responded with wins at the remaining two flights to secure the point. Amelie Gonzalez and Ginevra Muratori edged Adelaide Kreutel and Jolie Zink, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles before Maggie English and Ma O'Brien-McKevitt defeated Sriya Krishnan and Erika Phanord, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
Haverford quickly seized control once singles play began, sweeping all six matches to secure the team victory.
Sophie Capone evened the score at 1-1 with the first singles result of the afternoon, cruising past Wilson, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. Jolie Zink followed shortly after at the top flight, posting a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Muratori to give Haverford its first lead of the match.
Natalia Chapa extended the advantage at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Rosenberg. Adelaide Kreutel pushed the Fords closer to clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over English at No. 3 singles.
Abhi Menon secured another straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, defeating O'Brien-McKevitt, 6-1, 6-4, before Aarti Prochnow closed the match in second singles with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Gonzalez.
No. 35 Haverford 5, Mary Hardin-Baylor 2
After the afternoon victory over Skidmore, the Fords returned to the courts under the lights to face Mary Hardin-Baylor in Temple, Texas.Â
The Cru swept the doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. Lori Bryan and Avery Williams were first off the courts with a 6-3 win over Sophie Capone and Aarti Prochnow at No. 3 doubles. Emma Nordin and Breanna Taylor followed with a 6-2 victory against Natalia Chapa and Abhi Menon at No. 2 doubles, while Jolin Ha and Bailee Lane completed the sweep with a 6-3 decision over Jolie Zink and Adelaide Kreutel at the top flight.
Haverford responded with a dominant showing in singles, winning five of six matches to secure the comeback victory.
Zink quickly leveled the match at No. 1 singles, defeating Ha, 6-0, 6-2, for the first completed singles result. Aarti Prochnow then gave the Fords the lead for good with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nordin at No. 2 singles.
Natalia Chapa stretched the Haverford advantage with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Bryan at No. 4 singles before Sophie Capone clinched the team victory at No. 5 singles, defeating Taylor, 6-3, 6-2.
Adelaide Kreutel added another point in one of the day's most competitive matches, rallying past Lane at No. 3 singles. After splitting the first two sets, 6-1 and 3-6, Kreutel dominated the match tiebreak, 10-1.
Mary Hardin-Baylor earned its lone singles point at No. 6, where Avery Williams defeated Abhi Menon, 7-6, 6-0.
Women's Tennis will now return to Pennsylvania where they will next compete on Saturday, March 21 against No. 32 Whitman at 9 a.m. in Newport News, Va., before facing No. 15 Tufts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 22.
