FREDERICKSBURG, Va.. - The Haverford College women's tennis team advanced one singles player and one doubles team into the championship Round of 16 on the opening day of the ITA Regional Championships at the University of Mary Washington.
Singles
Haverford's Aarti Prochnow won her opening match, defeating UMW's Evelyn Snyder 8-6 in a pro set. Prochnow advanced to face seeded Sarah Donnelly of Washington & Lee in the Round of 32, dispatching Donnelly in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, to set up a Round of 16 matchup with Swarthmore's Lola Diaz (12 p.m. Sunday). Mallika Reddy put forth a comprehensive performance in an 8-1 victory against Isabella Szmodis of Moravian before falling to Claire Loftus of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-0, in the Round of 32.
First-year Jolie Zink fell to Franklin & Marshall's Natalie Untermeyer, 8-3, in her pro set played indoors. Zink will move into the consolation Round of 32, where she will take on Sarah McComas of Lebanon Valley at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Sophie Capone also was upended in the first round, falling to Isabella Rotaru of Mary Washington, 8-1. She will face Samantha Robertson of Christopher Newport in the consolation round at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Rookie Adelaide Kreutel fell to seeded Erin Li of Swarthmore, dropping the pro set 8-6. Kreutel will take on Olivia Guzzo of Shenandoah in the consolation round at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Doubles
In championship doubles, Prochnow and Zink defeated Erin Gross and Emma Carver of Christopher Newport University to advance to the Round of 32, where they prevailed again against conference rivals Franklin & Marshall's Sophia Rhazali and Kathryn Colclough, 8-4. The pair now will face the formidable duo of Addison Felts and Natalie Kim of Mary Washington at 8 a.m. Sunday.
The Erika Phanord/Sriya Krishnan doubles team impressed with a 7-5 win over Moravian's Szmodis and Leah Zolotareva before falling to Catholic's Shloka Tambat and Annie Nemoy, 8-3, in the Round of 32.
Abhishree Menon and Kirsten Close were defeated by Washington & Lee's Mary Kate Kahl and Jackie Daynovsky, 6-2. The Haverford duo will compete in the consolation bracket against Christopher Newport's Sophia Dadley and Scarlett Gamez at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Reddy and Kreutel were dispatched 6-0 by Swarthmore's Kathleen Shiffer and Paola Almeda and will face Mary Washington's Natalie Howell and Naomi Feltman in the consolation round at 9 a.m. Sunday. Sophia Capone and Natalie Chapa defeated Gettysburg's Gabriella Mazzeo and Arina Zhelyaskova, 6-4, before falling to Washington & Lee's Grace Lorenz and Sarah Donnelly in the Round of 32.
Doubles play at Mary Washington will continue Sunday morning at 8 a.m., followed by singles action at 10:30 a.m.
