EWING, N.J. — The Haverford College women's tennis team closed the TCNJ Lions Kickoff with a strong showing in singles play Sunday, collecting five victories to cap a competitive weekend against The College of New Jersey and NYU.
Haverford found its stride in singles, winning four of five full matches along with one shortened pro set.
Aarti Prochnow rolled past TCNJ's Mannan, 6-2, 6-1.
Adelaide Kreutel outlasted NYU's Yang, 7-5, 7-5, in one of the day's closest contests.
Natalia Chapa battled back in a tiebreaker after dropping the first set to defeat TCNJ's Ring, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-3.
Sophie Capone secured another straight-sets win, 6-4, 6-4, over NYU's Pujals, and
Abhi Menon added a 6-4, 6-3 result against NYU's Staunton. In a pro set,
Sriya Krishnan topped TCNJ's Ella Hardy, 8-2.
Other singles matches went to the opposition. TCNJ's Zoey Albert came from behind to defeat
Jolie Zink, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7, while NYU's Victoria Wang recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win against Reddy.
In doubles, the Fords managed one win in three outings.
Kirsten Close paired with Menon to defeat NYU's Wang and Narayan, 8-5. Two other matches were decided by narrow margins, with Kreutel and
Mallika Reddy edged 8-7 (7-4) by TCNJ, while Chapa and Capone fell 8-5 against NYU.
Haverford finished the weekend with six victories on the second day of play, five in singles and one in doubles. The performance rounded out a productive invitational against non-conference competition and provided a strong foundation for the fall season ahead.
The Fords return to action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships beginning Saturday, Sept. 27, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
