EWING, N.J. — The Haverford College women's tennis team turned in a balanced performance at the TCNJ Invitational on Saturday, highlighted by a perfect doubles slate and several gritty singles victories against The College of New Jersey and NYU as the fall season began in earnest.
The Fords went 4-0 in doubles to set the tone for the day. The first-year pairing of Kirsten Close and Abhi Menon opened with an 8-3 win over TCNJ's Eleni Dakos and Gabby Robinson. Jolie Zink and Aarti Prochnow followed with an 8-4 victory against NYU's Vera Bondarenko and Emma Kast, while Natalia Chapa and Sophie Capone cruised past TCNJ's Claire Hardy and Mandy Fleischmann, 8-2. Rounding out the sweep, Adelaide Kreutel and Mallika Reddy secured an 8-5 decision over NYU's Sara Gao and Sophia Yang.
Singles play proved more evenly split. Kreutel posted a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over Robinson, while Close followed with a steady 6-4, 6-4 victory against NYU's Aditi Narayan. Prochnow added a hard-fought win over TCNJ's Gabrielle Brideau, surviving a second-set tiebreak to prevail 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
In the shorter pro-set format, Capone and Menon added to the Fords' singles tally. Capone rolled past Hardy, 8-1, while Menon edged Gao, 8-5.
Not all results went Haverford's way. Reddy dropped a three-set battle to Dakos, 5-7, 6-3, 10-3, while Zink fell 6-2, 6-1 to Bondarenko. Chapa was edged in straight sets by NYU's Siona Vallabhaneni, 6-3, 6-4.
With four doubles wins and five singles victories, the Fords return to action in Ewing on Sunday, looking to close out a successful opening weekend.
