HAVERFORD, Pa. – Former Haverford College baseball standout Tommy Bergjans '15 has been selected as a Second Team starting pitcher on the D3baseball.com 50th Anniversary Golden Team, as announced by the organization on Friday.
The Golden Team recognizes 68 of the most accomplished NCAA Division III baseball players from the past 50 years. More than 30 selections earned national Player or Pitcher of the Year honors during their careers, while a similar number received All-America recognition in at least three seasons.
D3baseball.com considered All-America, Gold Glove and Player of the Year honors earned through the 2026 season, along with professional draft history, during the selection process. A point system was used to establish a pool of approximately three candidates for each position across four teams, with voting by media members determining the final selections.
One of the most decorated student-athletes in Haverford Athletics history, Bergjans became the first Ford to earn Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year honors when he captured the award in 2013. The right-hander went on to receive the distinction in three consecutive seasons from 2013 through 2015, becoming the first three-time Pitcher of the Year in conference history. Bergjans was named a D3baseball.com All-American in each of those three seasons, earning Second Team recognition in 2013 before securing First Team honors in both 2014 and 2015. He was also a three-time D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team selection and was named the organization's Mid-Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year in 2015.
The Manhattan Beach, California, native also received ABCA All-America recognition in 2014 and 2015, including First Team accolades following his junior campaign. He earned All-Centennial Conference honors during each of his four seasons, landing on the first team three times after receiving second-team recognition as a first-year.
Bergjans finished his Haverford career with a 27-10 record, a 1.69 ERA and 374 strikeouts across 282? innings. At the time of his graduation, he held program career records for ERA, opposing batting average (.195), strikeouts per nine innings (11.91), victories, innings pitched and strikeouts. His 374 career strikeouts also established a Centennial Conference record.
During his 2015 senior campaign, Bergjans went 5-3 with a 1.07 ERA and led all of NCAA Division III with 111 strikeouts and 14.84 strikeouts per nine innings. He became the first pitcher in program history to surpass 100 strikeouts in a season and recorded at least 10 punchouts in eight of his nine starts.
Bergjans set then-program records with nine victories and 96 strikeouts in 2014, finishing ninth nationally with a 1.08 ERA while helping the Fords capture the Centennial Conference championship. He also struck out 13 batters as Haverford defeated top-seeded Moravian during the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
In addition to his accomplishments on the mound, Bergjans was a three-time Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selection and was named the publication's Academic All-Area Baseball Performer of the Year in 2015. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition during his senior season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Bergjans in the eighth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. He was later traded to the Philadelphia Phillies as part of the Carlos Ruiz trade and advanced to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before joining the Cincinnati Reds organization during the 2018 season.
Bergjans is currently the Director of Minor League Pitching Development for the Minnesota Twins.
