LA CROSSE, Wis. - Haverford College men's track & field first-year Simon Lane placed sixth in the 1,500-meter final at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex on the campus of University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Lane crossed the line in a personal-best 3:46.64.
Lane, who qualified for the NCAA Championships after needing some scratches above him to make the field, showed his resilience in the preliminary round, finishing second in the first of two extremely competitive heats on Thursday to reach Saturday's national final.
In Saturday's final, he proved resilient once again, rising from 12th at the initial 300-meter split to firmly position himself in the pack as runners began to make their moves on the final lap. When everything shook out, Ryan Hagan of SUNY Geneseo came out on top in a meet-record 3:44.29, edging Sam Su of John Carroll (3:45.44), while Caleb Tenney of Johns Hopkins (3:46.14), Jayden Zywicki of UW-La Crosse (3:46.33), and Quinn Hampson of Tufts (3:46.48) rounded out the top five.
Lane was just behind in sixth, delivering an exhilarating finish that saw the Chicago product outlast Jack Czarnecki of RPI by just 0.04 seconds. Lane's composed and tactical effort allowed him to finish ahead of Czarnecki, along with Gavin Byerly of Manchester, who claimed the final All-America spot in eighth.
With the resounding performance, Lane earned First-team All-America honors in the event. Haverford has now collected 31 First-team All-America certificates in the outdoor 1,500 meters, with Lane becoming the first Haverford runner to earn the distinction since Jamie Moreland in 2023.
The All-America designation caps a standout 2026 campaign for Lane, who emerged as one of the most decorated rookie middle-distance and distance performers in the Centennial Conference and Metro Region. He earned First-team All-Centennial Conference honors in both the 3,000 meters and the distance medley relay during the indoor season, along with Second-team All-Centennial recognition in the 1,500 meters during the outdoor campaign.
Lane also picked up USTFCCCA All-Metro Region honors in the mile, 3,000 meters, and DMR indoors, in addition to outdoor recognition in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, and 3,000 meters. Along the way, he was twice named Centennial Conference Track Athlete of the Week (January 20 and April 7).
