Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. — The No. 43 Haverford College men's tennis team (9-11, 6-1 CC) secured a 4-3 victory over No. 33 Franklin & Marshall (11-6, 4-2 CC) on Friday afternoon at the Bramall Tennis Courts, locking up home-court advantage for the Centennial Conference semifinals, set for Friday, May 1.
To begin the match, Franklin & Marshall claimed the doubles point, taking two of three flights in tightly contested action. The Scarlet and Black struck first at No. 3 doubles, as Caden Hsia and Stefan Johnson defeated Nathan Arnold and Tucker Chesman, 6-4, to give Haverford a 1-0 lead. The Diplomats answered at second doubles, where Soren Rudin-Aulenbach and Gonzalo Gentou topped Nikhil Lavu and Teodor Bortan, 6-4, evening the score at 1-1. F&M then secured the doubles point at the top flight, as the Atlantic South's ninth-ranked squad of Zac Ashtiani and Luke Brodsky edged Marko Arboleda and Roberto Vazquez, 6-3, to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
However, it was Haverford that quickly turned the tide in singles, winning four of six matches to secure the team victory. Vazquez evened the overall score at 1-1 with a dominant 6–2, 6–1 win over Jack Gelman at fifth singles. Lavu followed at the top flight, dispatching regionally-ranked Brodsky, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Fords a 2-1 advantage.
Johnson extended the lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rudin-Aulenbach at No. 4 singles, before the hosts clinched the match-winning fourth point in second singles, where Arboleda turned away Ashtiani 6-4, 6-1.
No. 6 singles went in favor of the Diplomats, as Arnold earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hsia, followed by a competitive battle at No. 3 singles where Samuel Donnelly outlasted Bortan, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (12–10 tiebreaker). However, it was the Fords who claimed the 4-3 match victory.
With the win, Haverford secures home-court advantage for the Centennial Conference semifinals and will host Franklin & Marshall on Friday, May 1, with match time to be announced. The Fords will first wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 25, as the Scarlet and Black take on No. 7 Johns Hopkins at Stevenson University. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
