Men's Tennis Halted By No. 7 Swarthmore in Centennial Final, 4-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Despite a resilient push to reach the Centennial Conference Championship for the second consecutive season, the No. 42 Haverford College men's tennis team (10-13) saw its postseason journey end in a 4-0 defeat to No. 7 Swarthmore (20-6) on Sunday afternoon. Competing at the Faulkner Courts, the Fords faced a formidable Garnet squad that secured its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth with the victory.

The afternoon began with a challenging doubles session, as Swarthmore gained early momentum. The Garnet first struck at No. 2, where Teo Bortan and Niki Lavu fell to Andres Fente and Kai Chen, 6-3. Haverford rallied back to even the doubles point as the Marko Arboleda and Robbie Vazquez pairing took a 6-3 win over Michael Melnikov and Utham Koduri. Swarthmore officially clinched the doubles point at No. 3, where Caden Hsia and Stefan Johnson battled closely before falling, 6-4, to Max Lindstrom and Winston Zhang.

Trailing 1-0 entering singles play, Haverford attempted to mount a comeback against a clinical Garnet lineup. At No. 1 singles, Michael Melnikov proved difficult to solve, defeating Niki Lavu, 6-0, 6-3, to push the Swarthmore lead to 2-0. The Fords' deficit grew further at No. 6, where Caden Hsia was defeated by Dylan Hayes Gilbert, 6-2, 6-1. The match, and the conference title, were ultimately decided at No. 5, as Andres Fente secured the clinching point for the Garnet with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Vazquez. Several matches remained in progress when the contest was halted. Marko Arboleda was deep into a second-set battle at No. 2 singles, trailing 6-2, 4-4, while Stefan Johnson and Teo Bortan were also competing in unfinished matches at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

With the result, a young Haverford squad that reached the NCAA tournament a season ago concludes its season with a 10-13 record, while Swarthmore earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
