Box Score THE BRONX, N.Y. — The Haverford College men's tennis team (6-10) fell to No. 23 NYU (8-1) on Saturday afternoon, dropping the match 4-3 after the Violets secured the doubles point and edged out several tight three-set singles battles in a competitive overall contest.
NYU opened the match by taking two of three doubles courts. At No. 1 doubles, Marko Arboleda and Roberto Vazquez secured a 6–4 victory over Bryan Hui and Niklas von Hellens to give Haverford an early edge. The Violets responded at No. 3 doubles, where Boris Slesarev and Louis Frowein earned a 6–4 win over Caden Hsia and Stefan Johnson. The doubles point was decided at No. 2, as Jeh-Lei Fan and Shido Ito defeated Nikhil Lavu and Teodor Bortan 6–4 to give NYU a 1–0 lead.
Singles play saw NYU extend its lead early with three straight-set wins. At No. 3 singles, Frowein defeated Vazquez 6–1, 6–1 to make it 2–0 overall. At No. 2 singles, Hui topped Arboleda 6–4, 6–3 to push the margin to 3–0. At No. 1 singles, von Hellens sealed the match with a 6–2, 6–1 win over Lavu, giving NYU the clinching point at 4–0.
From there, Haverford finished the match on a strong note by taking the final three courts in match tiebreaks. At No. 4 singles, Teodor Bortan outlasted Ito 5–7, 6–3, 1-0 (10–3 tiebreaker). At No. 5 singles, Stefan Johnson rallied past Fan 3–6, 6–0, 1-0 (10-3 tiebreaker). At No. 6 singles, Caden Hsia completed the sweep of late-match comebacks with a 6–4, 6–7 (7-1 tiebreaker), 1-0 (10-7 tiebreaker) win over Kline.
The Fords will return to Bettye Marshall and Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts on Tuesday, April 14, as Haverford hosts Washington College for the annual Play With Pride Match.
