HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford College baseball sophomore shortstop Jackson Sgro has been named the Centennial Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced in a release on Tuesday morning.
Sgro, of Hopewell, N.J., turned in a monster week at the plate, batting .444 (8-for-18) with a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .542 on-base percentage. He totaled nine runs scored, 13 RBIs, four home runs—including two grand slams—two doubles, three walks, and a stolen base.
The reigning National Rookie of the Year opened the week with a historic performance in a 25-9 win over Lebanon Valley, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and nine RBIs while blasting three home runs, including two grand slams. The effort tied both the Centennial Conference and NCAA Division III records for grand slams in a single game.
Sgro followed that performance at Widener, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and a walk. He nearly added another home run Tuesday, but a baserunning miscue prevented it from counting. He then capped the week in a doubleheader split against McDaniel, highlighted by a 3-for-4 showing in game one with three runs scored, four RBIs, a double, and a home run.
Sgro and the Fords now make the trek to Lancaster's Penn Medicine Park today (March 31) for a battle against Franklin & Marshall. First pitch against the Diplomats is slated for 3:30 p.m.
