COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Despite a 15-hit offensive output and a five-run fifth inning, the Haverford College baseball team fell to Ursinus, 19-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Field on the campus of Ursinus. Haverford (10-18, 4-7 CC) showed consistent production at the plate, registering double-digit hits, but early deficits and a decisive Ursinus sixth inning proved too much to overcome.
Ursinus (18-12, 5-6 CC) jumped out quickly, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits and capitalizing on a Haverford error to take immediate control. The Bears added two more runs in the third and four in the fourth to extend their advantage to 10-2.
The Fords chipped away with single runs in the second and third innings. Tommy Belman laced a one-out double in the second, followed by a walk to Ryan Field. Will Schroen singled to load the bases, and Sammy Angel brought in a run with a single. The Fords trimmed the lead further with a two-out homer from Luke Treese in the third, but a home run by Luke Kopec and an Isaac Gesford single restored a four-run cushion for the Bears at 6-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Ursinus extended the lead to 10-2, aided by three consecutive singles and back-to-back walks.
The visitors mounted their strongest push in the fifth inning, erupting for five runs on four hits to cut the deficit to 10-7. Jackson Sgro ignited the rally with a leadoff home run to right-center, his sixth of the season. Later in the inning, Ryan Field added an RBI single, Will Schroen drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt, and Sam Dorian contributed an RBI single. A wild pitch also brought home Schroen as Haverford pulled within just three.
After David Bertz held the Bears to a 1-2-3 fifth inning, the Fords stranded two in the sixth. Treese and Belman each singled, but Chase Martin was summoned from the bullpen to retire the side without damage.
Ursinus responded emphatically in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs on four hits, aided by two Haverford errors and four walks. The inning featured a two-run triple from Luke Kopec and a two-run home run from Shane Beaver, pushing the lead to 19-7.
Tommy Belman led the Haverford offense with a 3-for-3 performance, including a double and a walk, while Angel added two hits and an RBI. Sgro and Treese each finished with two hits and a home run, combining for two RBIs. Dorian also recorded a multi-hit effort with two singles and an RBI. In total, five different Fords had multi-hit games, while every starter recorded at least one hit.
Gesford went 4-for-4 to pace the hosts, while Kopec added a 3-for-5 day with four RBIs and three runs scored. Four different Bears registered three or more hits. Chase Martin earned the win after 1.2 innings of two-hit relief, striking out a pair.
The Fords will step out of conference play on Wednesday, taking on No. 6 Rowan in Glassboro, N.J., at 3:30 p.m. before wrapping up the home-and-home series with Ursinus on Friday, April 17.
