GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Haverford College baseball team built an early lead behind another strong offensive showing, but No. 6 Rowan used late-inning rallies to secure a 9-7 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Rowan Baseball Stadium. The loss drops the Fords to 10-19 on the season, while the Profs improve to 22-3.
Colin Lewis got the ball for the Fords in the non-conference clash, as Rowan struck first in the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Brett Chiesa. Haverford responded in the second with some timely two-out hitting. Cole Roman was hit by a pitch and Luke Shane singled before Will Schroen delivered an RBI single to score Roman and even the contest at 1-1.
The Fords surged ahead in the third inning behind a two-run home run from Luke Treese, plating Miles Prusek after a walk to give Haverford a 3-1 advantage. Haverford added to its lead in the fourth, as Shane singled up the middle and Schroen lifted a double into the gap to set the table for Jack Phiel. Phiel lined a two-run single to left field, scoring Luke Shane and Schroen to extend the margin to 5-1 in favor of the Fords.
Haverford continued its offensive production in the fifth inning. After Prusek singled and advanced on a wild pitch, Treese came through again with an RBI single to push the lead to 6-1, chasing Dane Samartino from the game.
Rowan began to chip away in the sixth inning, scoring three runs in the frame. The Profs plated a run on a sacrifice fly from Nick Struble, followed by RBI singles from Chiesa and Kyle Lamanteer to cut the deficit to 6-4. Haverford answered in the seventh, as Jackson Sgro singled home Mauro DeCillis, who had walked, stolen second, and advanced to third on a throwing error, to make it 7-4.
The Profs continued their comeback in the bottom of the seventh, with a sacrifice fly from Jason Schooley trimming the lead to 7-5. Rowan then took control in the eighth inning, scoring four runs to seize a 9-7 advantage. Joey Bogart drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Evan McCoach had the most damaging hit of the contest, as he delivered a two-run triple to center field. Damon Suriani followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring for the visitors who had suddenly surged ahead.
Haverford totaled 10 hits in the contest, led by Treese's 2-for-4, three-RBI performance, which included his third-inning home run. Schroen added two hits and an RBI, while Luke Shane and Prusek each recorded two hits. Phiel contributed a pair of RBIs in the fourth inning.
On the mound, five Haverford pitchers combined to allow just eight hits. Andrew Schindler was among the standouts surrendering just one hit in 2.1 innings of scoreles relief after taking over for Lewis.Â
Rowan's bullpen proved effective late, with Jack Norton earning the win with a 1-2-3- eighth and and Christian Rice recording the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Haverford has only Centennial Conference competition on the schedule from this point forward, hopping right back into the Centennial slate on Friday with a matchup against Ursinus (3:30 p.m.) at home on Kannerstein Field.
