Right-handed pitcher Sammy Cohen delivers a pitch from the mound, fully extended in his throwing motion. He wears a white pinstriped Haverford uniform with a black cap featuring a red “H.” The baseball is just leaving his fingertips as his body leans forward, glove tucked near his waist. The dirt mound contrasts with the bright green outfield grass in the background under clear daylight.

Baseball Shuts Down Ursinus, 7-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Behind a pair of composed, veteran efforts on the mound, Haverford quieted Ursinus for much of the afternoon en route to a 7-1 Centennial Conference victory on Friday at Kannerstein Field. With the win, Haverford moves to 11-19 overall and 5-7 in Centennial play, matching Ursinus in the conference standings and registering a split.

Senior right-hander Sam Cohen set the tone early and never wavered, delivering six scoreless innings to earn the win. Cohen scattered four hits, struck out seven, and worked around traffic with poise, stranding multiple runners as Ursinus struggled to generate any sustained offense. He mixed his pitches effectively and limited hard contact, allowing just two walks while consistently getting ahead in counts.

On the other side of things, Dan Bass was a standout for the Bears, also striking out seven against six walks while surrendering four hits and three earned runs.

Cohen handed the game off to fellow senior Drew Doyle, who closed out the final three innings to secure his third save of the season. Doyle navigated a bit more traffic, allowing one run on three hits with three walks, but induced key outs when needed to preserve the comfortable margin. Together, the senior duo combined to hold Ursinus to just one run on seven hits while striking out eight.

More importantly, the Fords leaned on experienced leadership on the mound, as Cohen and Doyle combined to dictate the game's rhythm from first pitch to final out.

The Fords' offense provided timely support, beginning with a solo home run from Miles Prusek in the second inning to open the scoring. Haverford broke things open in the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of baserunners as Sam Dorian delivered a two-out, two-run single to push the lead to 3-0.

An aggressive eighth inning put the game out of reach at 7-0. Prusek sparked the rally with a leadoff triple, and the Fords took advantage of an Ursinus miscue with veteran pinch-hitter Luke Shane at the plate to add to the lead. Kaden Van Kempen and Will Schroen each drove in runs during the frame—Schroen highlighting the rally with a gap double—while disciplined at-bats and productive outs helped Haverford plate four runs despite recording just two hits in the inning.

Prusek finished 2-for-4 with a home run, triple, and two runs scored, while Dorian drove in a game-high two runs with his seventh-inning single. Schroen added a double and an RBI, and Van Kempen chipped in with a single and an RBI sacrifice bunt. Mauro DeCillis, who entered the game in seventh place nationally for steals, added two more to that tally while registering a hit and an RBI.

Kyle Rosenfeld and Brett Barrett each had two hits for the Bears, with Barrett reaching on an infield single in the ninth to plate the lone Ursinus run.

Haverford hops right back into action on Saturday, heading to Washington College for a doubleheader with the Shoremen. The action in Chestertown is slated to begin at noon as CC play ramps up in the penultimate week of the regular season.
