Standing on a green baseball field against a background of fences and trees, at least 15 players in pinstripe uniforms huddle and embrace, jumping, shouting, and smiling in a dynamic huddle. Sunlight from the side illuminates them, casting long shadows to the bottom left. The uniform details like the Haverford name and numbers are visible, particularly #10 on a jumping player’s back.

Baseball Walks Off Muhlenberg for Crucial CC Victory, 4-3

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team (9-16, 3-5 CC) delivered a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory over Muhlenberg (7-17, 2-6 CC) in a crucial Centennial Conference contest Friday at Kannerstein Field, with first-year Sammy Angel roping an RBI double to the left-field wall, plating pinch-runner Jack Phiel for the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

The Fords displayed the kind of resilience that makes Centennial Conference play so captivating. Haverford jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second when Miles Prusek singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a Tommy Belman single. The lead grew to 2-0 in the third inning after Mauro DeCillis was hit by a pitch, stole second, and was driven home by a Jackson Sgro double to right-center.

The Mules proved to be a stubborn opponent, finding their rhythm in the top of the sixth inning. After five strong innings from starter Sam Cohen, who kept the Mules off balance throughout the lineup, Spencer Hobson singled to begin the sixth.

After one final strikeout, Cohen exited with 5.1 extremely strong innings pitched with four strikeouts. Alex Jenkinson was summoned in relief and got Sean Habeeb looking before three consecutive Mules singles plated a pair of runs, tying the score at 2-2. Jenkinson recovered as the Fords combined to strike out the side, sending Haverford back to the plate.

Haverford was looking for an immediate answer, and Luke Treese provided one by launching a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a 3-2 lead. Muhlenberg leveled the score again in the seventh, using a Thomas Rorick leadoff double and a Spencer Hobson RBI single to make it 3-3.

From there, the tension mounted as both bullpens locked in. Drew Doyle was exceptional for the Fords, navigating two scoreless innings and working around a two-out Thomas Pranzo double in the eighth to keep the Mules at bay and earn the win.

In the bottom of the ninth, the stage was set for a classic finish, with Charlie Siper—who nailed down the save against Haverford on Tuesday—summoned from the bullpen for the visitors.

Tommy Belman reached base after being hit by a pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner Jack Phiel. Will Schroen then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Phiel into scoring position. With the game on the line, Sammy Angel hammered a double to left field, allowing Phiel to race home and secure the victory.

Six different Fords recorded one hit, with Angel, Sgro and Treese notching extra-base knocks. The Fords were agressive on the basepaths all afternoon, with five steals.

The Fords now hop right back into Centennial Conference action on Saturday, April 11 taking on No. 3 Johns Hopkins in a doubleheader on the road in Baltimore. Game one is slated for noon at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium.
