CHESTER, Pa. - The Haverford College men's track & field team opened up the two-day Danny Curran Invitational with distance night on the campus of Widener University Friday.
A large contingent of 5,000-meter runners was highlighted by a top-10 finish and a wave of personal best performances. Cole Branstrom led the way for the Fords, placing eighth overall in the fastest section with a time of 14:53.89. Competing against a deep field, Branstrom held his own throughout the race to secure Haverford's top finish on the day.
Owen Bluman followed with an impressive effort in the same heat, crossing 17th overall in 15:04.03. His performance marked a personal best, signaling a strong step forward early in the season.
The Fords saw continued success in heat two, where Wade Garoutte posted a personal-best 15:22.90 to finish 27th overall. Torin Pelton-Flavin also notched a personal record, running 15:35.54, while Raine Guidarelli added another PR for Haverford with a 15:36.99 effort. The trio contributed to a strong mid-pack presence for the Fords in the second section.
In heat four, Jack McCurry continued the trend of personal-best performances, clocking a 15:54.96. Classmate Liam Deimler followed in 16:04.17, gaining valuable experience in his first collegiate outdoor season. Gabriel Bernstein also recorded a personal best with a time of 16:12.59.
Deven Abrams rounded out the Haverford competitors, posting a personal-best 16:37.85 out of heat four to cap the day for the Fords. In total, Haverford placed nine runners under 16:40, with seven of those marks registering as personal bests.
In the 10,000 meters Haverford turned in a pair of strong distance performances, highlighted by a top three finish and multiple personal bests. Luke De Valpine led the way for the Fords, placing third overall in a time of 30:52.85.
De Valpine's effort marked a new personal best as he paced with the lead group throughout the race and closed well to secure a top-three finish in a competitive field. Jakob Maiwald also delivered a standout performance, finishing 14th overall with a personal-best time of 31:46.97.
Maiwald's result added further depth for Haverford, as he navigated a crowded middle pack before pulling away in the later stages of the race.
Kyler Lee tossed the shot put for the Fords on Friday afternoon, kicking off action with a best throw of 11 meters (36 feet, 1.25 inches).
Haverford will return to action at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium in Chester, Pa., for day two of the Danny Curran Invitational, with action set to begin at 10 a.m.
