Box Score MALIBU, Calif. — The No. 25 Haverford College men's tennis team fell to No. 21 Sewanee, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon, as the Tigers swept doubles play before claiming four of the six singles matches.
Sewanee opened the afternoon with a sweep of the doubles contests. In the third doubles match, Lucas Wrigley and Maxim Verellen defeated Niki Lavu and Caden Hsia, 6-3. The Tigers then secured the doubles point in second doubles as Ben Lammert and Drew Rukavina edged Teo Bortan and Stefan Johnson, 7-5. Sewanee completed the doubles sweep in the final match to finish, with Andre Jakobi and Samuel Schroerlucke defeating Marko Arboleda and Roberto Vazquez, 6-4, in first doubles.
In singles play, Sewanee extended its lead early as Schroerlucke defeated Vazquez, 6-3, 6-1, in third singles to go up 2-0. Shortly after, first singles wrapped up as Jakobi defeated Arboleda, 6-4, 6-1, giving the Tigers another point.
The Fords got on the board in second singles when Lavu battled through a three-set contest to defeat Henry Hyden, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, cutting into the deficit for the Scarlet and Black. The Fords added another point in fifth singles as Johnson rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Verellen, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to pull Haverford wihtin one point, 3-2.
Sewanee responded in sixth singles however, where Wrigley secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Aarush Kumar, to clinch the match at 4-2.
The final match of the afternoon concluded in fourth singles, with Ben Lammert recovering after dropping the first set to defeat Teodor Bortan, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, to seal up the 5-2 victory for the Tigers.
The Fords will look to turn things around in their next match, taking on Hope International on Thursday, March 12. First serve in Fullerton, Calif., is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
