No. 26 Men's Tennis Splits the Day in Newport News

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No. 26 Haverford College men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 5-2 to No. 24 Christopher Newport before besting Shenandoah by the identical 5-2 score. The Fords are now 2-1 on the year following the second weekend of dual match action. 

No. 24 Christopher Newport 5, No. 26 Haverford 2

Against No. 24 Christopher Newport, top-seeded Marko Arboleda and Teodor Bortan fell by a 6-2 count in doubles action to Barrett Foster and Vincent Truong. Stefan Johnson and Roberto Vazquez, playing at No. 2, dropped a 6-0 decision to Bhuvanesh Kumaresan and James Smith. Nikhil Lavu and Zachary Miano lost a 6-1 contest at the No. 3 spot as CNU took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. 

In singles action, Arboleda dropped a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5) set to Russell in the No. 1 position. He lost the second stanza 6-2.  

At the No. 2 slot, Lavu garnered a 6-4 victory in the opening frame. He continued his solid match by taking the second set 6-1 for the point in the Haverford column.  

At No. 3, Vazquez lost the opening set 6-1 before bouncing back for a 7-5 victory in the second stanza. However, he was unable to continue the momentum in the 6-3 loss. 

Bortan snagged the first set by a 6-3 count at the No. 4 spot. He continued his stellar play with a 6-4 victory in the second set. 

Johnson dropped a 6-1, 6-0 contest at the No. 5 position while Zachary Miano lost a 6-2, 6-3 contest at the No. 6 position. 

No. 26 Haverford 5, Shenandoah 2

Against Shenandoah, the Fords took a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Playing in the top spot, Arboleda and Vazquez notched a 6-3 victory over Dominick Suwak and Lucas Beasley. Bortan and Johnson bested their foes, Artem Babaiev and Neal Love, by a 6-2 score at No. 2. Third-seeded Lavu and Lucio Kombo won by a 6-2 count against Shine Tokas and Aryanth Chintharlapalli. 

In singles action, Lavu overcame a 1-0 deficit to take down Tokas in three sets, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4. Bortan snagged a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 3 position.

Playing at the No. 5 slot, Caden Hsia registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Siddarrth Rajgopalan. Chait Krishna completed the win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Max Arkans. 

Arboleda fell by a 6-2, 6-2 score against Suwak in the No. 1 spot. Kombo dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 4 against Babaiev.

The Fords return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host No. 17 Carnegie Mellon at 10 a.m. inside Alumni Field House.
