CLAREMONT, Calif. - Haverford College women's tennis senior Rachael Fitzgerald will face off with Ruth Hill of Trinity University (Texas) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament on Saturday at the Biszantz Tennis Center in Claremont, California, as the NCAA announced in its bracket release on Friday afternoon.
The action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. PT (12 p.m. ET) tomorrow with the winners advancing to second round action "not before" 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET).
Fitzgerald is the sole representative from the Centennial Conference and becomes the third Haverford player in four seasons to qualify, following former teammates Abbey Russano (2022) and Ellie Esterowitz (2023).
Competing exclusively at No. 1 singles and doubles for the Fords, Fitzgerald recorded a 12-5 mark in dual matches and a 7-1 record in Centennial Conference play. She secured a notable three-set victory over Lauryn Douglas of No. 37 Bethel on March 13 during the Fords' annual spring break trip, along with two wins against Franklin & Marshall's Jenna Harrison in both the regular season and postseason. The Waterford, Virginia, native was ranked No. 20 in the ITA Atlantic South singles rankings on April 4 and was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week on April 22 after a 4-0 week that included singles wins over Ursinus and Stevens.
Hill, meanwhile, returns to the national stage for the third time in her career. The Abilene, Texas native and three-time ITA All-American enters the tournament ranked No. 24 nationally, boasting a 28-7 record and a 17-5 mark at No. 1 singles this spring. She reached the second round in 2023 and pushed the eventual champion to three sets last season. A dominant force in the SCAC, the senior earned her third Player of the Year honor and has twice won the ITA Regional Championship.
The Second Round matchup would feature Fitzgerald taking on the winner of Abigail Penados of North Central (Ill.) and eight-seeded Lindsay Eisenman of host CMS. Fitzgerald faced Penados back on March 9 at the USTA National Campus, as Penados prevailed in straight sets.
