FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Haverford College men's tennis team opened play at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Thursday afternoon, as action began in the Championship Singles bracket ahead of the tournament's full slate on Friday.
Niki Lavu earned a hard-fought victory over ninth-seeded Henry Imorde of Washington & Lee. Lavu captured the opening set, 7-5, before Imorde evened the match with a 6-2 win in the second. In the super tiebreaker, Lavu edged out a 10-8 decision to advance to a Round of 32 matchup against Carnegie Mellon's Daniel Kong on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Owen Kilmer battled Nick O'Dea of Salisbury, taking the first set in a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker. O'Dea responded with a 6-4 win in the second set before narrowly securing a 10-8 victory in the super tiebreaker. Kilmer moves into the consolation bracket, where he will face Ryan Battaglia of Mary Washington on Friday at 2 p.m.
First-year Robbie Vazquez fell in straight sets to John Riordan of Mary Washington, 6-4, 6-4. He will face Franklin & Marshall's Zac Ashtiani in the consolation bracket on Friday at 2 p.m.
Aarush Kumar dropped the first set to Tudor Vlad, 6-3, and was forced to retire due to injury while trailing 3-2 in the second.
Play continues Friday with the start of the B1, B2, and B3 singles flights, as well as the doubles bracket, alongside continued Championship Singles action at the University of Mary Washington.
