HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's fencing team competed inside Alumni Field House at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championship on Saturday, hosting a large field of individuals from programs across thre region looking to secure qualifying spots to the national championships.
The regional championships brought together competitors from Penn State, Princeton, Duke, North Carolina, Penn, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, Temple, NJIT, Stevens, Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, and the host Fords.
NCAA regional results account for 60 percent of the formula that determines championship selections, with regular-season results making up the remaining 40 percent.Â
Carter Wood was Haverford's top finisher on the day, taking a 29th overall showing in sabre, while Grace Leverton finished 41st overall. Nina Hamilton was the top finisher in epee, with a 33rd place showing, while Nina Chafee finished 41st, and Payton Wagner was 43rd overall. In foil, Sophie Stamicar finished 37th overall while Aanya Jeganathen finished in a tie for 39th.Â
Qualifiers for the NCAA National Fencing Championship will be announced on Tuesday, March 10 on the NCAA website. Action at nationals is slated for the University of Notre Dame and South Bend, Indiana. The championships will begin on Thursday, March 19 and finish on Sunday, March 22. The women will compete first on Thursday and Friday followed by the men on Saturday and Sunday. Â
