POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Haverford College women's fencing team finished eighth at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships at Vassar on Sunday. The Fords tallied 98 individual bout victories on the afternoon. As was the case a season ago, the individual round was consolidated with awards and placements determined during the team competition.
Following a packed day of fencing, senior Carter Wood was named to the EWFC All-Academic Team. She was joined by Abby Geiger (Vassar), Railenny Almonte (CCNY), Yaffa Gottlieb (Yeshiva), Julia DiPaolo (Stevens), Katherine Hanin (Hunter), Mikayla Joseph (Tufts), Rosabel Cepero (Johns Hopkins), Eva Esqueda (Drew), and Lily Millard (Wellesley).
Round 1: Drew 18, Haverford 9
Taking on familiar foe Drew, the Fords earned a 6-3 sabre victory behind a 3-0 mark from Carter Wood and two wins from Eliza Kollett. Grace Leverton also logged a win. In epee, Nina Hamilton went 3-0 to lead the squad.
Round 2: Vassar 19, Haverford 8
Against the host Brewers, Kollett, Leverton, and Wood each earned a victory in sabre. In foil, Janna Castro (2-1) and Aanya Jeganathen (1-2) secured wins. In epee, Chafee (1-2) and Raynn Krueger (1-2) each picked up a bout victory.
Round 3: Stevens 20, Haverford 7
A narrow 5-4 sabre defeat highlighted the round against the Ducks, with Wood adding two wins and Kollett and Leverton contributing one apiece. Epee also registered three bout victories, as Hamilton (2-1) and Chafee (1-2) earned wins.
Round 4: Hunter 15, Haverford 12
Against the Hawks, both sabre (5-4) and epee (7-2) prevailed. Wood and Leverton each posted two sabre wins, while a 3-0 performance from Hamilton supported two wins apiece from Krueger and Chafee in epee.
Round 5: Wellesley 20, Haverford 7
Epee secured a 5-4 squad victory over the Blue, as Chafee went 3-0 to complement two wins from Hamilton. Kollett and Leverton each recorded a sabre victory.
Round 6: Tufts 23, Haverford 4
Against the Jumbos, bout victories came from Wood in sabre, Jeganathen in foil, and Chafee and Hamilton in epee.
Round 7: Johns Hopkins 25, Haverford 2
Chafee went 2-1 to lead the Fords against the Blue Jays.
Round 8: Haverford 24, CCNY 3
Against CCNY, the Fords were in command with 8-1 victories in each weapon. In sabre, Wood (3-0), Kollett (3-0), and Leverton (2-1) led the way. In foil, Sophie Stamicar (3-0), Castro (2-1), and Jeganathen (3-0) paced the squad. In epee, Chafee (2-0), Hamilton (2-0), and Kreuger (1-1) each earned victories.
Round 9: Haverford 25, Yeshiva 2
Identical 9-0 sweeps in epee and sabre lifted the Fords over the Maccabees, while foil added a 7-2 win. Stamicar went 3-0 in foil, and Emely Polanco finished 2-0 in the round.
The Fords return to action on Saturday, February 28, at the NIWFA Championships hosted by Drew. Competition begins at 9 a.m. at the Simon Forum in Madison, N.J.
