Women's Fencing Posts wins over Lafayette, Rutgers at MACFA A vs. C

BALTIMORE — The Haverford College women's fencing team competed at the MACFA A vs. C bouts at Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Fords fenced five rounds, with victories over Lafayette and Rutgers highlighting the day.

Haverford 22, Lafayette 7

Against the Leopards, the Fords earned an 8-1 victory in epee behind wins from Nina Hamilton, Nina Chafee, and Payton Wagner. In sabre, Eliza Kollett, Eleni Antoniades, and Carter Wood contributed to a 9-0 sweep. Foil fell 6-3, with victories from Sophie Stamicar, Paige Copenhaver, and Aanya Jeganathen.

Drew 17, Haverford 10

Haverford dropped a tight contest against Drew. The sabre squad fell 6-3 but received wins from Wood (2-1) and Antoniades. Foil was edged 5-4, though Copenhaver and Stamicar each earned two victories. In epee, Evelyn Penhoet won twice and Wagner added a win in a 6-3 defeat.

Haverford 18, Rutgers 9

The Fords bounced back with a strong showing against Rutgers. Haverford went 8-1 in epee, led by 3-0 performances from Penhoet and Chafee, along with a 2-1 mark from Wagner. Sabre posted a 6-3 victory with two wins apiece from Antoniades, Kollett, and Grace Leverton. Jeganathen recorded the lone foil win for the Fords.

Johns Hopkins 25, Haverford 2

Against the host Blue Jays, Haverford's two individual victories came in epee from Hamilton and Chafee.

Navy 15, Haverford 12

The Fords were narrowly edged by Navy, falling 5-4 in all three weapons. In foil, Jeganathen went 3-0 while Janna Castro added a victory. Penhoet posted a 3-0 mark in epee, with Hamilton contributing a win. Wood finished 3-0 in sabre, and Leverton added the Fords' remaining victory in the discipline.

Women's fencing will return home on Saturday for Senior Day action against Drew inside Gooding Arena. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with the men's and women's fencing senior classes honored prior to the first bout.
