BALTIMORE – The Haverford College women's fencing team competed at the Johns Hopkins Invitational on Sunday inside Goldfarb Gymnasium, taking on the host Blue Jays as well as Drew and No. 15 North Carolina, turning in a solid performance highlighted by a 7–2 epee squad victory against Drew.
Johns Hopkins 22, Haverford 5
Opening the matinee against the host Blue Jays, Haverford's sabre squad picked up wins from Carter Wood and Eleni Antoniades in a 7–2 setback. The foil squad was shut out, while epee fell 6–3 with two wins from Evelyn Penhoet and one from Nina Hamilton.
Drew 16, Haverford 11
Against the Rangers, Haverford earned a sabre victory from Eliza Kollett, while foil claimed two wins from Paige Copenhaver and one from Aanya Jeganathen. Epee was victorious by a 7–2 margin, with Penhoet and Nina Chafee each going 3–0 and Payton Wagner notching Haverford's other win in the bout.
No. 15 North Carolina 26, Haverford 1
The Fords were swept 9–0 in both epee and sabre, but picked up a foil win from rookie Jeganathen, who defeated Sreehitha Gandluri.
Following a challenging weekend of competition, Haverford returns to action on Sunday January 25, traveling to State College, Pa., for the Penn State Invitational.
