BALTIMORE– The Haverford College men's fencing team wrapped up a whirlwind weekend at the Johns Hopkins Invitational on Sunday, facing host Johns Hopkins (#2 in Division III), No. 14 North Carolina, and Drew (#7 in Division III) at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Johns Hopkins 21, Haverford 8
Opening the day against the Blue Jays, the Fords fell 5-4 in epee, 6-3 in foil, and 8-1 in sabre. Haverford's epee wins came from a perfect 3-0 mark by Jack Richards and a victory from Eric Chen. In foil, Conrad Seib-Levinson contributed two wins while Dean Myers added one, and Sam Yarosh delivered the team's lone sabre victory.
Drew 14, Haverford 13
The rivalry with Drew continued at a neutral site in Baltimore. Men's foil led the way with a 7-2 win over the Rangers, highlighted by a 3-0 performance from Andrew Strayer, two wins from Henry Fedonchik, and one each from Henry Bishop and Seib-Levinson. Drew claimed epee 7-2, though Kenji Gullo and Ezra Weintroub earned victories for the Fords. Sabre was tightly contested, with Drew edging Haverford 5-4; Haverford's wins came from Robert Li (two), Andy Loo, and Greg Roumiantsev.
No. 14 North Carolina 17, Haverford 10
Facing top Division I competition, the Fords put forth a strong effort against the Tar Heels. Men's foil fell 5-4, despite two wins from Oliver Po and one each from Myers and Fedonchik. Epee delivered a 6-3 squad victory, led by 2-1 records from Richards, Kenji Gullo, and Ian Alvarez. UNC clinched the overall win with a 9-0 sabre sweep.
Following a challenging weekend of competition, Haverford returns to action on Sunday, January 25, at the Penn State Invitational in State College, Pa.
