MADISON, N.J. - The Haverford College women's fencing team opened competition at the Drew Invitational on Saturday, taking part in five rounds of action against a challenging slate of opponents. The Fords earned their first victory of the day against Wheaton and showed strong performances throughout the opening day at Simon Forum.
Denison 25, Haverford 2
The Fords struggled against Denison, with Sienna Chung providing a win in sabre and Nina Hamilton prevailing in epee to account for Haverford's two individual bout victories.
Drew 16, Haverford 11
Against the host Rangers, Haverford was paced by an 8-1 epee victory. After sabre added wins from Chung, Carter Wood, and Eleni Antoniades, the epee squad earned three wins apiece from Evelyn Penhoet and Hamilton, while Olivia Rueger chipped in a pair. Drew was buoyed by a perfect 9-0 mark in foil.
Haverford 22, Wheaton 5
The Fords earned their first victory of the day against a short-handed Wheaton squad, highlighted by multiple strong performances across all three weapons. Hamilton provided a win over the Lyons to cap the team's dominant effort.
Cornell 25, Haverford 2
Haverford struggled against the Big Red in the afternoon session, with an individual triumph coming from Chung in sabre.
NJIT 18, Haverford 9
Going up against the Highlanders, Haverford impressed with a 5-4 epee victory. Hamilton and Nina Chafee each delivered a pair of wins, while Penhoet added one. Foil fell 6-3, but Sophie Stamicar and Paige Copenhaver each contributed a win. Wood added the sabre victory for the Fords.
The two-day Drew Invitational will continue Sunday at Simon Forum, where Haverford will return to the strips beginning at approximately 9 a.m.
