MADISON, N.J. - On the first day of the Drew Invitational, the Haverford men's fencing team competed in four rounds of action earning wins against the Drew JV squad as well as Wheaton to wrap up competition at the Simon Forum.
Round 1: Haverford 19, Drew (JV) 8
In the opening round, Haverford defeated the Drew JV squad by a 19-8 margin. The sabre squad secured a 5-4 win behind a 3-0 performance from Stephen Yarosh, along with victories from Osaretin Idahor and Ryotaro Sakazaki. In foil, Dean Myers, Oliver Po, and Michael Pyo all went a perfect 3-0 to lead a 9-0 sweep, while Jackson Richards posted a 3-0 record in epee to complement a pair of wins from Ian Alvarez.
Round 2: Drew 17, Haverford 10
Facing Drew's varsity squad, the Fords fell 17-10 despite a 6-3 victory in foil. The sabre squad went winless in the round, but foil delivered two wins each from Henry Fedonchik, Andrew Strayer, and Conrad Seib-Levinson. Alvarez added two epee wins, while Richards and Eric Chen contributed one apiece.
Round 3: Cornell 14, Haverford 13
Against the Big Red, Haverford was narrowly edged despite squad victories in both foil and epee. Idahor and Yarosh picked up sabre wins in a 7-2 loss, while Seib-Levinson added a foil win to go with two each from Fedonchik and Po. Chen dominated with a 3-0 mark in epee, while Kenji Gullo, Alvarez, and Richards each added a win to secure a 6-3 squad triumph.
Round 4: Haverford 14, Wheaton 13
The Fords closed the day with their second victory, narrowly edging Wheaton. Yarosh notched the lone sabre win of the round, while foil earned a 5-4 victory behind two wins each from Myers and Pyo and one from Strayer. Epee prevailed 8-1, led by strong performances from Chen and Gullo.
The two-day Drew Invitational continues tomorrow at Simon Forum, with the Fords returning to the strips at approximately 9 a.m.
