HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 25th-ranked Haverford men's squash (3-7) suffered a non-conference defeat to 18th-ranked Navy (14-6), falling by a 9-0 final score. The match, held under the lights of the GIAC Squash Courts, was the first home match of the season for the Fords.
The Midshipmen got on the board first, as Lucas Spiro bested Henry Jiang, 11-3, 11-5, 11-8, in flight four. In flight five, despite an extraordinary effort in game three that saw extra points, Tighe Mullarkey defeated Qianzhi Zhao, 11-6, 11-8, 14-12, to give Navy a 2-0 lead. Flight seven saw the visitors extend their advantage to 3-0 when Eli Levy got the better of Francis Betkowski, 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.
After falling 11-6, 11-6, in the first two games, Noah Tunis fought back to force extra points in game three. However, Matthew Wang fended off Tunis' comeback to win, 11-6, 11-6, 13-11, putting Navy ahead, 4-0.
In the ninth flight, Sean Wu dispatched Daniel Braun, defeating the sophomore, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9, for the visiting team's clinching fifth point. Navy added another point in flight six, with Ramsay Killinger defeating Garret Fantini, 11-4, 11-5, 11-3, followed by Navy's seventh point of the day, when Michael Tierney got past Arvin Krishnan, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6.
Kai Schinaman was the only Ford to claim a game against the Midshipmen, but Alexander Orr pushed the visitors' advantage to 8-0, defeating Schinaman, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3. To cap off the 9-0 victory for Navy, Wenqing Tang defeated Aaryaman Jaising, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8, in the second flight as the sizable Thursday night crowd gathered around the last court to finish.
Due to the postponement of the matchup with Dickinson on Saturday, Jan. 25, No. 25 men's squash will next compete in a two-match day against No. 31 Hobart (10:30 a.m.) and No. 33 Vassar (3:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 1. A pre-game ceremony will be held before the matches to honor the Haverford squash seniors on Senior Day.
