FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Owen Kilmer became the first Haverford College men's tennis player since 2012 to reach the championship singles semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, highlighting Saturday's action at Mary Washington.
Kilmer defeated Washington and Lee's Dutch Prather in the quarterfinals before his tournament run ended against top-seeded Alex Feies of Carnegie Mellon. Zach Miano and Chait Krishna added a B1 doubles championship for the Fords, while Lucio Kombo advanced to a consolation singles final.
Championship Singles
Kilmer powered into the semifinals with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Prather, prevailing in a first-set tiebreak before taking control in the second set. The victory made Kilmer Haverford's first championship singles semifinalist at the regional tournament since Kevin Caulfield in 2012.
Facing Feies in the semifinals, Kilmer again battled through a tightly contested opening set before falling, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Kilmer finished his impressive tournament run with four singles victories, including two straight-set wins Friday that secured his quarterfinal berth.
B1 Singles
Kombo rallied past Washington College's Aksel Tinnes-Rimehaug, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 11-9, to advance to the consolation final, which was later cancelled due to rain. After dropping the opening set, Kombo won a second-set tiebreak to force a deciding match tiebreak, where he edged Tinnes-Rimehaug to secure the victory.
Miano and Krishna completed their championship run with two victories Saturday.
The Haverford pairing defeated Johns Hopkins' Cyrus Chan and Lixing Jiang, 8-6, in the semifinals before outlasting Franklin & Marshall's Samuel Donnelly and Nathan Arnold in the final. Miano and Krishna captured the crown with an 8-7 victory, winning the championship match's tiebreak 7-2. The duo finished the draw with four victories after winning twice Friday to reach the semifinals.
Saint Joseph's Invitational
Closer to home on Hawk Hill, Alejandro Rodriguez advanced to the White Bracket consolation singles final, while Rodriguez and Dhruv Anantaraman earned a doubles victory to extend their weekend.
In singles consolation action, Aarush Kumar fell to Jefferson's Matthew Cizmarik, 8-1. Rodriguez received a walkover against Lafayette's Tomas Grygalis to advance to the consolation final, where he dropped an 8-2 decision to Cizmarik.
Rodriguez and Anantaraman posted a 6-0 doubles victory over Saint Joseph's Jakob Gaudreau Barnes and Stefan Brajovic.Â
