FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Four members of the Haverford Men's Tennis team advanced to the round of 32 in the championship singles draw as the Fords opened play at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Thursday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington.
Marko Arboleda, David Jin, Will Geske and Owen Kilmer each earned victories in the round of 64, setting up a full slate of second-round matches Friday in the Round of 32.
Arboleda cruised past Mary Washington's Thomas Davis, 6-1, 6-2, while Jin battled through a first-set tiebreaker to defeat Franklin & Marshall's Samuel Donnelly, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Geske added a straight-sets victory over Gettysburg's Teo Burgess, 6-4, 6-3.
Kilmer joined his teammates in the next round with a key victory over Swarthmore's Connor Chun. After taking the opening set 6-2, Kilmer prevailed in a second-set tiebreaker to secure a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win.
Teo Bortan fell to second-seeded Adamantios Stavrakas of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-0, and will continue tournament play in the consolation draw. Bortan will face Christopher Newport's Andrew Kinnear in consolation action at 3:30 p.m.
All four of Haverford's round of 32 matches are scheduled for noon Friday. Arboleda will face Swarthmore's Hayes Gilbert, Jin will meet Swarthmore's Nikola Galov, Geske will take on Mary Washington's Asher Willenborg and Kilmer will square off against Randolph's Jacob Martin.
