HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College men's soccer team (3-0-1) made a triumphant return to Walton Field on Tuesday afternoon, rolling past Penn State Abington (0-3-1) by a 4-0 final in the Fords' 2026 home opener.
Charles Sharp and Thomas Vanni each scored twice for Haverford, while the Fords controlled the contest from start to finish with a 23-2 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. The victory also extended Haverford's program-record unbeaten streak to an incredible 24 consecutive matches dating back to the start of the 2025 season.
Haverford established itself in the attacking third immediately. Austin Branch had an attempt blocked inside the opening minute before Jonathan D'Amour fired high and Sharp forced Penn State Abington goalkeeper Angelo D'Asti into a save on a header in the fifth minute. The early pressure eventually paid off at the 11:15 mark, when Carter Kroenke delivered a driven pass into the box for Sharp. The sophomore received the feed, spun around his defender and fired a right-footed shot into the back of the net to give the Fords a 1-0 advantage.
The Fords continued to push forward after taking the lead, with Sharp remaining at the center of the attack. After another Sharp attempt was blocked and Haverford earned consecutive corner kicks, the sophomore struck again at 19:49. Sharp pounced on a ball that had been cleared to the top of the box and rocketed a shot past D'Asti for his second goal of the contest and third of the young season, doubling the Scarlet and Black's advantage to 2-0.
Haverford kept Penn State Abington pinned in its defensive half for much of the remainder of the period. Sharp nearly completed a first-half hat trick with several additional chances, while Connor Gustafson twice threatened on headers. The Fords finished the opening 45 minutes with a 13-0 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, carrying the 2-0 lead into the break.
The offensive pressure continued immediately after halftime. Haverford earned two corners within the opening seven minutes before D'Amour came inches away from adding a third goal when his 53rd-minute attempt struck the crossbar. The Fords eventually broke through again at 58:37, this time courtesy of Vanni. The senior unleashed a low, driven free kick that took a deflection off a Penn State Abington defender and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, stretching the Haverford advantage to 3-0.
Penn State Abington generated its first shots of the contest in the 72nd and 73rd minutes. Grayson Benson was called upon for the first and only time on an attempt from Anthony Abreu, making the save to maintain the clean sheet.
Vanni then put the finishing touches on the victory in the 81st minute. Following a collision between a Nittany Lion defender and Parker Castro, Vanni pounced on the loose ball and unleashed a curling effort into the upper corner for his second goal of the afternoon and third of the season, giving the Fords a commanding 4-0 advantage. Haverford continued to press through the final whistle, earning three more corner kicks and generating several late chances.
Sharp spearheaded the Haverford attack with a game-high nine shots, three on goal and two goals, while Vanni finished with three shots, two on target and two goals. D'Amour added three attempts, while Kroenke recorded the game's lone assist. Haverford put six of its 23 shots on frame.
Benson played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save to record his second consecutive shutout and third clean sheet in four matches to begin the season. The Haverford defense has surrendered just one goal through its opening four contests.
The Fords return to Walton Field on Saturday, September 12, welcoming Susquehanna for a 3 p.m. matchup.
