HAVERFORD, Pa. — Morgan Reis delivered a hat trick, while Erica Pardón had a hand in three goals as the Haverford College field hockey team rolled past Alvernia, 5-1, on a warm Saturday afternoon at Swan Field.
The victory was Haverford's first of the season, improving the Fords to 1-3, as the Scarlet and Black turned a scoreless opening quarter into an offensive showcase. Reis scored all three of her goals on three shots, while Pardón added two goals and an assist to account for all five Haverford tallies.
Reis became the first Haverford player to record a hat trick since former Varsity Cup winner Ravenel Davis scored three times against Elizabethtown on Sept. 15, 2021. Davis also recorded a hat trick against Immaculata earlier that month. After Haverford generated four shots and two penalty corners in a scoreless first quarter, the offense came alive midway through the second.
Reis opened the scoring at 24:05 following a Haverford penalty corner. Pardón provided the setup, finding Reis for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.Alvernia answered just 33 seconds later, as Ava Michael scored her fourth goal of the season to quickly level the contest at 1-1. The response only seemed to ignite the Haverford attack.
Just 1:13 after her opening tally, Reis struck again. Alexis Mollin supplied the assist at 25:51 as Reis converted her second goal in less than two minutes, restoring the Haverford advantage at 2-1. Pardón then put her own stamp on the scoring surge at 27:59, finishing a feed from Alice Stein to send the Fords into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Haverford scored three times in a span of just 3:54 during the decisive second-quarter burst. Pardón continued to dictate the action after halftime. She tested Alvernia goalkeeper Jazmin Mayfield early in the third quarter before finding the cage again at 39:30. Norah Block provided the assist as Pardón buried her second goal of the afternoon, stretching the Haverford advantage to 4-1.
The two-goal performance continued a prolific run for Pardón, who was again at the center of the Haverford offense. She fired a game-high six shots, putting four on goal, and finished the afternoon with five points on two goals and an assist. The afternoon, however, belonged to Reis.
With the Fords firmly in control, Reis completed the hat trick at 50:36. Haverford earned consecutive penalty corners before Pardón forced another save from Mayfield. The ensuing action remained alive in front of the cage, where Reese Dewhirst connected with Reis for the finish, completing the first three-goal performance by a Ford in nearly five years and putting an exclamation point on the 5-1 victory.
Haverford controlled the attacking numbers throughout the afternoon, finishing with a 19-8 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Reis was a perfect three-for-three in converting her shots, while Pardón paced the team with six attempts. Stein added four shots and an assist, while Mollin, Block and Dewhirst each recorded helpers.
Lindsey Darby earned the victory in goal, making five saves while allowing just the lone second-quarter tally. Haverford's defense held Alvernia without a shot in the third quarter and limited the Golden Wolves to eight attempts for the contest.
Saturday's contest also served as Haverford's annual Play With Pride Game, celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion and belonging in college athletics. Haverford returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 16, traveling to Susquehanna for a 7 p.m. matchup in Selinsgrove, Pa.Â
