SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Haverford College field hockey team controlled the action from start to finish Wednesday evening, receiving goals from Lydia Moy, Alice Stein and Erica Pardón in a 3-0 shutout of Susquehanna.
The Fords improved to 2-3 with their second consecutive victory, overwhelming the River Hawks with an 18-1 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Lindsey Darby faced just one shot on goal and turned it aside to secure her first shutout of the season.
Haverford immediately established itself in the attacking end, with Stein producing the first shot of the contest less than four minutes into the opening quarter. The Scarlet and Black continued to apply pressure before Moy broke through at 10:22. The first-year dribbled toward Susquehanna goalkeeper Taytum Lombardi, who turned away Moy's initial attempt, but Moy quickly collected the rebound and buried her second chance into the back of the cage for her first career goal and a 1-0 Haverford advantage.
The pressure only intensified following the opening tally. Pardón tested Lombardi before having two additional attempts blocked, while Poppy Swallow and Stein each forced saves during a flurry of chances late in the opening quarter. Haverford finished the first 15 minutes with a commanding 9-0 advantage in shots.
The Fords remained in control during the second quarter and doubled their advantage just before halftime. Carolina Sanchez provided the setup for Stein, who converted at 29:22 to send Haverford into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Haverford's defense was equally impressive, holding Susquehanna without a single shot during the entire first half. The River Hawks finally registered their first attempt in the 40th minute following a penalty corner, but Darby turned aside Taylor Rothermel's effort to preserve the shutout.
At the other end, Haverford continued to generate chances. Moy and Swallow each threatened during the third quarter as the Fords carried their two-goal cushion into the final 15 minutes.
The Scarlet and Black needed less than two minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game away. After earning consecutive penalty corners, Louisa Coughlin connected with Pardón, who finished at 46:55 to stretch the Haverford advantage to 3-0. The tally was Pardón's third goal over the last two contests after her two-goal, one-assist performance against Alvernia on Saturday.
Haverford continued to control possession down the stretch, earning another penalty corner before Lindsey Turner forced a save in the closing minutes. The Fords prevented Susquehanna from generating another shot following Rothermel's third-quarter attempt to finish off the clean sheet.
Stein led the Haverford attack with five shots, while Pardón and Moy each registered four attempts. Pardón, Stein and Moy each scored once, with Sanchez and Coughlin providing assists. Darby made one save across 60 minutes to record her first shutout of the season, anchoring a Haverford defensive unit that allowed just one total shot over the entire contest.
The victory gave Haverford back-to-back wins after Saturday's 5-1 triumph over Alvernia, with the Fords outscoring their opponents 8-1 during the two-game stretch.
Haverford returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19, traveling to Glassboro, N.J., for a noon non-conference matchup against Rowan.
