HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford College Director of Athletics Christa Racine has announced the hiring of Andre Gibbs as the next head coach of the Haverford women's basketball program. Gibbs arrives at Haverford after spending the past three seasons on the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball staff. He joined the Quakers as an assistant coach in August 2023 before being promoted to assistant recruiting coordinator ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Gibbs will begin the position at Haverford on August 3.
"We are excited to welcome Andre to Haverford as our next head women's basketball coach," Racine said. "Throughout the search process, he stood out for his ability to recruit outstanding student-athletes, build genuine relationships and create a program where young women are challenged to grow both on and off the court."
Racine continued, "What stayed with me most was the way he talked about his players. It is clear that he cares just as much about who they become as people as he does about how they perform as athletes. That commitment, along with his passion for the game and vision for the program, made him the right fit for Haverford. I am excited to see the impact he will have on our student-athletes and our community."
During the 2025-26 campaign, Gibbs helped guide Penn to a 17-10 record. He played a pivotal role in the continued development of sophomore forward Katie Collins, who earned second-team All-Ivy and first-team All-Big 5 honors, as well as junior guard Mataya Gayle, an honorable mention All-Ivy selection who surpassed 1,000 career points during the season.
Penn qualified for the Ivy League Tournament during each of Gibbs' first two seasons with the program, advancing to closely contested semifinal matchups against Princeton and Columbia. During his tenure, Gibbs worked with several All-Ivy performers, including Jordan Obi, Stina Almqvist, Gayle and Collins. Gayle and Collins were also named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in consecutive seasons.
"I am incredibly excited and honored to be named the next head coach of Haverford women's basketball," Gibbs said. "I would like to thank Director of Athletics Christa Racine and the entire search committee for their trust and belief in me. After several special years at Penn, I am excited to bring everything I have learned to this new chapter."
Gibbs added, "I look forward to meeting our student-athletes, embracing the Haverford community and working together to pursue excellence. There is no better place to develop champions—on the court, in the classroom and in life."
Before joining the Penn staff, Gibbs spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Utah State. He previously served two seasons as an assistant coach at Queens University of Charlotte, helping Kalaya Hall earn All-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2021-22 and Amari Davis receive SAC All-Freshman recognition in 2020-21.
Gibbs began his collegiate coaching career in the Bi-Co as a volunteer assistant at Bryn Mawr College, where he contributed to the program's daily operations, player development and opponent scouting.
A graduate of Philadelphia University, now known as Thomas Jefferson University, Gibbs played under Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee. He finished his collegiate career with 1,400 points and 350 assists while helping the Rams earn 91 victories and two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships. Gibbs was also recognized as a Freshman All-American and the CACC Rookie of the Year during the 2012-13 season.
The Delaware native joins a Haverford program with a proud championship history and a strong foundation for future success. The Fords have captured three Centennial Conference championships, winning the program's first title in 2014 before earning back-to-back crowns in 2019 and 2020. Haverford has also secured four NCAA Tournament berths, highlighted by trips to the second round in both 2014 and 2019.
