Women's Tennis Wins First Five Points in 5-2 Triumph over Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The No. 41 Haverford Women's Tennis team (6-6, 3-1 CC)  secured a strong 5-2 road victory over Washington College (7-6, 1-22 CC) on Tuesday afternoon at the Schottland Tennis Center, using a decisive doubles point and efficient singles play to improve to 3-1 in Centennial Conference action.

The Fords wasted little time establishing control in doubles play, clinching the opening point with wins at No. 2 and No. 1. The pairing of Sophie Capone and Mallika Reddy set the tone with a convincing 6-2 victory in the first match to finish. Shortly after, Abhi Menon and Adelaide Kreutel delivered a 6-4 win at the top flight to seal the doubles point. Washington College picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, as Isabella Sorhegui and Sofia Sperandei upended Erika Phanord and Sriya Krishnan, but the damage had already been done as Haverford carried a 1-0 lead into singles competition.

Haverford continued its momentum into singles, quickly building an insurmountable lead with four straight victories in the early finishes. Kreutel was first off the court at No. 2 singles, dominating in a 6-3, 6-0 decision. Reddy followed with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, doubling the Fords' advantage. Phanord then provided the clincher, as she extended the lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5. Krishnan then battled through a competitive second set to earn a 6-3, 7-5 victory and secure the team's fifth point of the afternoon.

With the match already decided, the remaining contests played out as tightly contested battles. Washington College picked up its first point at No. 4 singles, where Eva Kading edged Menon in a three-set super tiebreak, 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 10-5.

The final match to conclude came at the top singles position, where Juanita Arbelaez outlasted Aarti Prochnow in a marathon clash, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 12-10, in a match that showcased high-level play from both competitors. Haverford's depth proved to be the difference on the day, as the Fords claimed four straight-set singles victories and controlled the doubles point from the outset.

The win pushes Haverford back to .500 overall at 6-6 heading into a busy weekend. The Fords will be in split squad action against a pair of CC foes, Dickinson and Muhlenberg (Friday, April 10, 4 p.m.) before heading to Division I Villanova on Sunday, April 12 (noon).
