Men's Lacrosse Clipped by No. 9 Gettysburg, 14-8

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Haverford College men's lacrosse team (8-4, 2-2 CC) fell to No. 9 Gettysburg College (6-3, 3-0 CC), 14–8, on Friday evening under the lights of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Despite the loss, the Fords showed resilience, particularly in the third quarter where they scored three goals. Haverford won the faceoff battle 14–11, which helped them gain possession, but were unable to overcome Gettysburg's strong second quarter in which the home team netted five goals, including an extra-man goal.

Charlie Vaccaro led Haverford with two goals on three shots, while Colin Hulett added two goals. Reid Tietjen contributed a goal and an assist, putting him 10th all-time in Haverford history with 105 goals, while Max Esteban went 9-for-16 at the faceoff X with a team-high six ground balls. Defensively, Nils Bergstrom caused two turnovers, and Mac Broaddus made 13 saves in between the posts.

Haverford opened the scoring early, as Vaccaro struck at 13:23 to give the Fords a 1–0 lead. Gettysburg responded just 20 seconds later with a goal from Jackson Hearn (13:03) to tie the game at 1–1, sparking a dominant stretch for the Bullets. Goals from Charlie Johnson (11:45), Jacob Derwinski, Johnson again, and Jackson Barroll capped a four-goal run, quickly pushing the advantage to 5–1. Despite the surge, the Scarlet and Black found a late response, as Tietjen converted a feed from Philip Passalaqua with five seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 5–2 at the end of the first.

The Fords looked to build momentum early in the second quarter, with Will Weinstein scoring at 11:42 to make it 5–3. However, Gettysburg answered once again, capitalizing on turnovers and efficient shooting. Goals from Will Schwanke (10:40) and Patrick Maroney (10:15) extended the lead to 7–3, before Colin Hulett finished a pass from Tietjen at 5:48 to trim the margin to 7–4. From there, the Bullets seized control of the half, as Johnson netted two goals—including a man-up tally with 20 seconds left—before Benny Kasoff added a late strike to give Gettysburg a commanding 10–4 lead at the break.

Haverford responded with its strongest stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Gettysburg 3–1 while tightening up defensively. After Barroll opened the half for the Bullets at 12:28 to make it 11–4, the Fords answered with sustained pressure. Colin Hulett got things started at 6:46 (11–5), Blake Donnellan followed at 5:16 (11–6), and Vaccaro added his second of the day at 3:42, cutting the deficit to 11–7 heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Gettysburg halted Haverford's momentum and put the game out of reach. Maroney opened the scoring at 8:13 to extend the lead to 12–7, before Weinstein responded for the Fords at 3:32 to make it 12–8. The Bullets, however, closed the door late, as Cooper Savoy scored at 2:36 (13–8) and Johnson added the final tally at 0:31 to secure the 14–8 victory.

The Fords will look to bounce back on Wednesday, April 8, with a road matchup at (RV) Muhlenberg scheduled for 7 p.m.
