HAVERFORD, Pa. — The No. 36 Haverford College women's tennis team (10-10) fell to No. 5 Johns Hopkins (11-6) on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision on the indoor courts at Alumni Field House due to inclement weather.
The Blue Jays opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins at all three flights. At third doubles, Lia Melvin and Sahana Madala defeated Maddy Kayyali and Sriya Krishnan, 6-0. Hopkins followed at No. 2 doubles, where Claire Loftus and Sophia Kim topped Sophie Capone and Mallika Reddy, 6-0, clinching the doubles point. At first doubles, Ava Li and Kamila Wong defeated Adelaide Kreutel and Abhi Menon, 6-2, as Johns Hopkins carried a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Johns Hopkins extended its lead at fourth singles, where Loftus defeated Capone, 6-3, 6-0, to make the score 2-0. The Blue Jays pushed the advantage to 3-0 at third singles, as Wong earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Reddy.
At first singles, Zink battled Kim in a three-set match. Kim took the opening set 6-4, before Zink responded with a 6-2 second set, but it was Kim, who closed out the match 6-2 in the third to make the score 4-0.
The Fords picked up their lone point at second singles, as Kreutel rallied past Sahana Sanjeev, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, trimming the deficit to 4-1.
Johns Hopkins closed out the match at sixth singles, where Isabel He defeated Erika Phanord, 6-1, 6-0, followed by a win at fifth singles from Sydney Langer over Menon, 6-4, 6-1, to secure a 6-1 victory for the visitors.
The Fords will now turn their attention to the Centennial Conference Tournament, as Haverford will welcome No. 45 Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on Thursday, April 30, at the Bramall Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
