HAVERFORD, Pa. - The No. 30 Haverford College women's tennis team (10-9, 7-1 CC) has secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Centennial Conference Championship after a 4-3 road victory over No. 66 Bryn Mawr (9-9, 2-5 CC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Fords conclude the regular season with a 7-1 record in conference play and will host a semifinal match against Franklin & Marshall on Thursday, April 30. The contest will be Haverford's eighth consecutive CC semifinals appearance.
The match Tuesday at the Bryn Mawr Tennis Courts began with doubles play, where Adelaide Kreutel and Abhi Menon provided a strong start at the No. 1 position with a 6-0 shutout. Bryn Mawr responded by taking the remaining two flights to claim the doubles point, as Sophie Fenster and Gioanna Zhao earned a 6-1 win over Sophie Capone and Maddy Kayyali at No. 3, followed by Bianca Vesuna and Shay Villegas clinching the point with a 6-4 victory over Sriya Krishnan and Mallika Reddy at No. 2.
In singles action, the Fords displayed impressive efficiency to reclaim control. Fenster extended Bryn Mawr's lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jolie Zink at No. 1, but Haverford answered across the remaining courts. Kreutel dominated at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kelli Eng, and Sophie Capone followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Claire Emmanuel.
Menon put Haverford on the brink with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, taking down Carina Roberts. With the match potentially on the line at No. 6, Maddy Kayyali delivered the decisive point, defeating Giselle Gandakusuma 6-4, 7-5 to secure the team victory at 4-2. Bryn Mawr's Bianca Vesuna then outlasted Sriya Krishnan in a super tiebreaker at No. 6 (6-4, 6-7 [9-11], 1-0 [10-7] to account for the final margin.
With the No. 2 seed locked in, the Fords will now prepare for postseason play at home, hosting Franklin & Marshall in the semifinal round next Thursday with a spot in the championship match on the line. Prior to postseason, Haverford has one last regular season match on the docket, hosting No. 5 Johns Hopkins on Saturday (11 a.m.) on campus.
