VILLANOVA, Pa. — The No. 30 Haverford College women's tennis team (9–9) fell to No. 22 Denison (17–4), 6–1, on Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Tennis Complex, as the Big Red claimed five of six tightly contested singles matches after sweeping doubles play.
Denison opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins at all three flights. At No. 3 doubles, Maddie Larsen and Maia Nowicki defeated Sophie Capone and Mallika Reddy, 6–4. At No. 1 doubles, Rafaella Ramos and Peyton Oda edged Jolie Zink and Aarti Prochnow, 7–5, to clinch the coveted doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Caitlin Van Winkle and Dasha Chistyakova completed the doubles sweep with a 6–2 win over Adelaide Kreutel and Abhi Menon as both teams then moved into singles play.
In singles, Denison extended its lead at No. 4, where Chistyakova defeated Reddy, 6–1, 6–2. The Big Red then moved ahead 3–0 at No. 3 singles as Ramos topped Prochnow, 6–2, 6–4. Haverford responded at No. 5 singles, where Sophie Capone rallied for a three-set victory over Nowicki, 4–6, 6–2, 6–4, trimming the deficit to 3–1.
Denison clinched the match at No. 2 singles, as Van Winkle outlasted Kreutel, 6–3, 5–7, 6–2, to give the visitors a 4-1 lead. At No. 1 singles, Oda edged Zink in a tight three-set battle, 7–6 (7–2), 4–6, 6–4. The final match saw a three-set clash at No. 6 singles, where Larsen held off Menon, 6–4, 4–6, 6–4, to complete the 6–1 team result in favor of the Big Red.
No. 30 women's tennis returns to Centennial Conference play next, traveling to Bi-Co rival Bryn Mawr for a 4 p.m. match on Tuesday, April 21.
