Men's Lacrosse Soars Over River Hawks, 19-7

The victory improved Haverford to 5-1, matching the team’s six-game start from last season’s squad that went on to open the year 8-1.

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A seven-goal first quarter set the tone Saturday afternoon as the Haverford College men's lacrosse team (5-1) powered past Susquehanna (2-4) by a 19-7 final at Swan Field.

The Fords generated offense early and often, outshooting the River Hawks 51-23 while winning 18 of 29 faceoffs and holding a 42-34 advantage in ground balls. Haverford also capitalized on special teams, converting two of four extra-man opportunities while limiting Susquehanna to 0-for-4 clip on the man advantage.

Nick Snyder led the offensive effort with six points on three goals and three assists, while Reid Tietjen added five points behind a goal and four helpers. Will Weinstein and Blake Donnellan each recorded hat tricks, with Donnellan scoring three times on just three shots. Ethan Waugh, Philip Passalaqua, and Charlie Vaccaro each tallied two goals in the balanced attack.

Defensively, the Fords held Susquehanna to just one goal in both the first and fourth quarters. Mac Broaddus earned the win in goal after making four saves in the first half before Haverford rotated through three reserve goalkeepers in the second half.

Susquehanna struck first when Matt Chubenko finished a feed from Nick Remund just over two minutes into the game, but Haverford quickly seized control. Donnellan answered less than a minute later to spark a 7-0 run that defined the opening period.

Vaccaro and Snyder followed with consecutive goals off assists from Tietjen before Weinstein buried a man-up opportunity midway through the quarter. Late tallies from Waugh, Wyatt Silverman, and Tietjen capped a flurry of offense as the Fords closed the period with a commanding 7-1 lead.

The River Hawks attempted to rally early in the second quarter with goals from Drew Filipovits and Jimmy Maro, trimming the deficit to four at 7-3. Haverford responded immediately, however, as Weinstein and Donnellan found the net to reignite the offensive momentum.

Passalaqua, Kolin Brandeis, Snyder, and Weinstein added goals during a dominant stretch that pushed the advantage to 13-3 by halftime.

Haverford continued to press in the third quarter. Donnellan opened the frame with his third goal of the afternoon before Passalaqua and Vaccaro added scores to stretch the margin to 16-3. Susquehanna answered with four of the next five goals, including tallies from Maro, Garrett Howell, Filipovits, and Pat McDermott, but Snyder halted the run with his third goal to give the Fords a commanding 17-7 edge entering the final period.

The Fords sealed the victory in the fourth quarter as Waugh struck again midway through the period before Colin Hulett converted a pass from Seamus McNally for the game's final goal.

Haverford will return to action on Wednesday, March 11, traveling to Hoboken, N.J. for a 4 p.m. matchup against No. 7 Stevens before wrapping up spring break with another home contest next Saturday, March 14 against Mary Washington (1 p.m.)
