Men's Lacrosse Earns Gritty 13-12 Victory over Ursinus

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College men's lacrosse team (8-3, 2-1 CC) held off Ursinus (4-5, 0-3 CC) for a 13–12 victory on Saturday afternoon at Swan Field. The Fords built a multi-goal cushion through three quarters and withstood a late push from the Bears, as the defense and 15 saves from Mac Broaddus proved crucial down the stretch.

Haverford was led offensively by Philip Passalaqua, who tallied four goals and two assists. Reid Tietjen added three goals, including the game-winner, while Colin Hulett finished with three goals on three shots. Blake Donnellan contributed two goals and an assist. Defensively, Tietjen collected five ground balls, while Kieran Mayes, Ronan West, and Passalaqua each added four. At the faceoff X, Max Esteban went 10-for-19 as the Scarlet and Black won 16 draws.

Ursinus struck first at 13:49 of the opening quarter, but Haverford answered at 9:30 as Passalaqua finished a feed from Mac Grubb to tie the game at 1–1. The Bears regained the lead at 4:05 before Donnellan responded just 31 seconds later to even the score at 2–2. Passalaqua then gave the Fords their first lead at 2:31 (3–2), but Ursinus countered late to knot the score once more. In the final seconds, Tietjen connected off an assist from Esteban with 0:15 remaining, sending Haverford into the second quarter ahead, 4–3.

The Scarlet and Black extended their lead early in the second, as Donnellan struck at 13:11 to make it 5–3. After a pair of Ursinus goals cut the margin to one, the Fords surged late in the half. Ethan Waugh scored at 2:35 off a Passalaqua assist (6–4), before Passalaqua added another at 1:54 (7–4). Hulett capped the run just 15 seconds later, pushing the advantage to 8–4. Ursinus found the net in the closing seconds, but Haverford carried an 8–5 lead into halftime.

Ursinus opened the third with back-to-back goals at 14:03 and 12:45 to trim the deficit to 8–7. Haverford responded with a key man-up tally from Hulett at 8:35, assisted by Nick Snyder, to make it 9–7. Passalaqua followed with another goal at 6:16, extending the lead to 10–7. After the Bears answered at 5:32 (10–8), Tietjen struck at 4:33 off a Donnellan assist (11–8), and Hulett completed his hat trick at 3:42 off a Passalaqua feed, giving the Fords a 12–8 advantage heading into the fourth.

Tietjen opened the final quarter with his third goal at 11:58, pushing the lead to 13–8. Ursinus mounted a late rally, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 13–10, and added two more goals in the final minutes to make it 13–12 with 0:15 remaining. The Scarlet and Black held firm in the closing seconds, with Broaddus turning aside key attempts to preserve the one-goal victory.

Haverford returns to action on Friday, April 3, traveling to Gettysburg for a 7 p.m. opening faceoff.
