HAVERFORD, Pa. – The No. 35 Haverford College women's tennis team (3-4) dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 20 Williams (7-2) in non-conference action on Friday afternoon inside Alumni Field House, with rookie Jolie Zink delivering the Fords' lone point after prevailing in a tightly contested match.
Williams secured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches, with the Ephs taking courts three, one, and two in that order. Erika Phanord and Sriya Krishnan were first off at No. 3 doubles, falling 6-0.
The top pairing of Zink and Aarti Prochnow followed with a 6-1 setback at No. 1, before Adelaide Kreutel and Abhi Menon closed doubles play with a 6-1 loss at No. 2.
Trailing 1-0, Haverford (3-4) showed resilience in singles, particularly behind Zink at the top spot. After No. 3 singles finished first, where Kreutel dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to give Williams a 2-0 lead, attention quickly shifted to court one. Zink responded with the Fords' highlight of the afternoon, battling through a dramatic three-set match. She edged the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3), before dropping the second set 6-2. In the decisive third set, Zink again rose in the biggest moments, securing victory to claim a 7-5 win and put Haverford on the board.
Williams, however, maintained control across the remaining courts. No. 1 singles was the second match to finish, cutting the team score to 2-1, but the Ephs answered quickly.
At No. 4, Mallika Reddy fell 6-3, 6-3 as the Ephs restored a two-point cushion. No. 2 singles followed, with Prochnow dropping a three-set battle, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, clinching the match for Williams. The Ephs added two more straight-set victories to round out the scoring in the second round of matches to hit the courts. Sophie Capone fell at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2, before Menon closed the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 6.
Despite the final margin, Zink's performance at the top of the lineup stood out as a key bright spot, showcasing poise and endurance against a nationally ranked opponent. Haverford will look to build on that momentum as it continues its spring schedule with a Senior Day contest against Gettysburg on Saturday inside Alumni Field House.Â
Action is slated to begin at 12 p.m. as the Fords will honor Erika Phanord, Abhi Menon, and Sriya Krishnan prior to first serve with the Bullets.
