Women's Lacrosse Stuns No. 16 Messiah, 12-7

GRANTHAM, Pa. — The Haverford College women's lacrosse team (5-3) turned in a statement performance on Wednesday afternoon, taking down No. 16 Messiah (3-4) by a 12–7 final at Witmer Family Lacrosse Stadium. The Fords controlled the tempo for much of the contest, using four-goal bursts in both the second and third quarters to seize command, while the defense held the Falcons in check down the stretch to secure the upset victory.

Sophie Jaffe led all players with six points, recording a goal and a career-high five assists while directing the Haverford attack. The Scarlet and Black were also powered by Brooke Epstein, who finished with four goals and an assist, while Bella Gattuso added two tallies—including the initial game-winner—and went a perfect 2-for-2 on free-position attempts. Kylie McNamara paced Haverford with five draw controls, and defensively, Alexis Brown and Finley Jordan each caused two turnovers, with Jordan scooping up a game-high five ground balls. In goal, rookie Shaina Lewis impressed in her first career start, making nine saves on 25 shots to earn the win.

Haverford wasted little time setting the tone, as Epstein opened the scoring at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter off an assist from Louisa Coughlin. The Fords continued to press, with Mikelle Smith doubling the lead late in the period before Epstein struck again in the closing seconds—this time off a feed from Jaffe—to give the Scarlet and Black a 3–0 advantage after one.

The second quarter saw both sides trade runs, but Haverford maintained control. After Messiah got on the board early, the Fords responded with back-to-back goals from Daniela Martini, both set up by Jaffe. Jaffe then added a goal of her own to stretch the lead to 7–2. The Falcons answered with a late push, scoring twice in the final moments of the half to trim the deficit to 7–4 heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Scarlet and Black delivered their most decisive stretch of the afternoon. Gattuso opened the third-quarter scoring with a free-position goal, and McNamara followed with a tally off an Epstein assist. Epstein later added an unassisted goal before Gattuso capped the run with another free-position finish during a player-up opportunity, giving Haverford a commanding 11–4 lead.

Messiah made one final push in the fourth quarter, scoring three times to try and close the gap. However, the Fords had an answer, as Epstein found the back of the net once more off a Jaffe assist to halt the momentum. From there, Haverford's defense held firm, with Lewis coming up with key stops to preserve the lead and seal the 12–7 victory over the Falcons.

Haverford returns home next, hosting Ursinus at Swan Field on Saturday, March 21. Opening draw is set for noon.
