HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's lacrosse team (6-3, 1-0 CC) opened Centennial Conference play with a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, using a balanced offensive effort and a decisive edge in player-up opportunities to defeat Ursinus (5-4, 0-1 CC) by a 17-7 final at Swan Field in a hard-fought, physical game that featured 36 turnovers and 12 cards.

Haverford placed four players in multi-goal territory, led by Bella Gattuso, who finished with a game-high five goals on seven shots, including six on target. Brooke Epstein added four goals on nine attempts with seven shots on goal, while Daniela Martini was highly efficient with three goals and an assist, placing all of her shots on cage.

Mikelle Smith was a standout as she orchestrated the attack with two goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal, and contributed on the draw to help Haverford control possession during key stretches.

The Bears controlled the opening draw, but early defensive pressure from Haverford College quickly flipped the field. Lauren Anderson caused a turnover and collected a ground ball to ignite the first offensive push. After Jaime Michaud opened the scoring for Ursinus, the Fords answered with back-to-back goals. Gattuso converted a player-up chance at the 6:45 mark following a green card, and Epstein followed with a finish off a feed from Sophie Jaffe to give Haverford a 2–1 lead. Ursinus responded late in the quarter as Michaud netted her second goal to even the score at 2–2 after one.

Haverford seized control in the second quarter with a sustained offensive run. Smith opened the period with a goal just 30 seconds in and secured the ensuing draw control, leading to a free-position finish from Gattuso. Martini then struck twice in quick succession, converting passes from Smith and Jaffe as the Fords stretched the lead. Continuing to take advantage of player-up situations, Jaffe and Smith each added tallies during the run, pushing the margin to 8–2. Ursinus broke through once during a player-down sequence, but the Haverford defense, anchored by caused turnovers and ground balls from Alexis Brown and Kiri Jensen, limited the Bears' opportunities as the Fords carried an 8–3 lead into halftime.

The Fords continued their momentum out of the break, putting together another decisive stretch in the third quarter. Gattuso recorded a natural hat trick in the period, including a player-up finish off another assist from Jaffe at 8:37. Epstein and Jaffe also added goals as Haverford extended the advantage to 13–5. Ursinus received goals from Devin Buggy and Ashley Noto, the latter coming on a free-position attempt, but was unable to slow the Fords' offensive rhythm.

In the fourth quarter, Haverford continued to capitalize on turnovers and transition opportunities to put the game out of reach. Epstein opened the scoring in the period at 11:41 after causing a turnover herself, and Kylie McNamara followed with a goal off an assist from Martini. Martini later added a player-up tally with a helper from Georgia Buendia, and Epstein capped her day with her fourth goal on a feed from Smith. Ursinus added late goals from Noto and Dana DeSiato, but the outcome was firmly in hand as the Fords closed out the 17–7 decision.

Noto and Michaud paced the Bears with two goals each, while Whitney Hershey added a goal, including a shorthanded score. DeSiato contributed a goal and an assist in the setback for the visitors.

Haverford returns to action on Wednesday, March 25, hosting No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology at Swan Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
