The Haverford
College men's basketball team fell to Swarthmore 63-53 in a Centennial Conference clash at Tarble Pavilion Wednesday night. Haverford (7-13, 1-7 CC) led by three points at halftime but was outscored 39-26 in the second half as the Garnet finished on a 19-4 run to wrestle control of the contest.
Despite holding a 43-42 rebounding edge and blocking eight shots, the Fords struggled with shooting efficiency, making just 21-of-66 field goals and 2-of-25 from beyond the arc. Swarthmore (12-8, 6-2 CC) capitalized with 21 made free throws, securing the victory.
Niko Rizos scored 10 points and recorded two blocks. Christian Uremovich added nine points and collected four rebounds while also making two steals. Tyler Nolan finished with nine points, including a three-pointer, and converted both of his free-throw attempts. Adam Strong-Jacobson posted an impressive stat line with eight points, a career-best five blocks, and 11 rebounds.
Eddie Paquette led Swarthmore with 18 points, converting 5-of-9 from the field and sinking 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Paquette also contributed defensively with three steals. Brady Kageyama added 12 points, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and making six free throws, while also recording two steals. Zander Jimenez excelled at the free-throw line, hitting 9-of-10 attempts and securing six rebounds.
Swarthmore struck first when Devin Burger knocked down a three-pointer at the 16:30 mark, but Haverford answered immediately with a layup from Niko Rizos just 22 seconds later. Tyler Nolan drained a three at 15:27 to knot the score at 5-5, and the teams were off and running from there.
Paquette gave the Garnet a 13-9 lead at the 12-minute mark, and the Garnet held a 21-16 advantage with 6:37 showing on the first-half clock. Haverford leaned on its interior presence and second-chance opportunities late in the half, rattling off an 8-0 run for a 24-21 advantage as Strong-Jacobson connected in the paint. Christian Uremovich converted a three-point play with 1:28 remaining to give the Fords a 27-24 advantage heading into the break.
Haverford carried that momentum into the opening minutes of the second half, pushing its lead to nine behind consecutive fast-break finishes with a 6-0 run out of the gates. Uremovich scored in transition at 19:01 before Adam Strong-Jacobson followed with a dunk off a turnover at 18:38, extending the margin to 31-24. Rizos converted a second-chance hook shot for the nine-point cushion at 33-24.
Swarthmore was able to cut the lead to just two as Jimenez converted a pair at the free-throw line, as suddenly the Haverford lead was just two at 41-39. Burger tied it at 41-41 with just over 10 minutes left, but the Fords regained composure and extended the lead to five at 47-42 on Tyler Nolan's jumper at 7:27. Nolan connected again at the 6:11 mark for a 49-44 lead, but the Garnet seized control down the stretch, using an 8-0 run to regain the lead.
Paquette and Jimenez combined for key free throws in the final minutes before Burger converted a key layup with 1:20 left to put the hosts up by four. Burger later punctuated the comeback with a dunk in the closing seconds, as the Garnet outscored Haverford 39-26 in the second half to secure a 63-53 victory.
Men's Basketball will now continue Centennial Conference play on Saturday as the Fords head to Westminster, Maryland, to face McDaniel on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
