McDaniel Pulls Away Late in 80-65 Win Over Men's Basketball

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College men's basketball team (7-14, 1-8 CC) fell to McDaniel (13-8, 3-6 CC), 80-65, on Saturday at Gill Center. The Fords' bench contributed 32 points, but McDaniel's 19 made free throws secured the victory for the hosts.

Emmanuel Cheung Hernandez led the Fords with 10 points, converting 4-of-6 field goals and adding three rebounds. Adam Strong-Jacobson also scored 10 points, connecting on 4-of-7 shooting and recording one block. Raja Coleman tallied nine points, hitting two three-pointers and collecting three rebounds. Niko Rizos added six points, shooting 3-of-5 from the field and securing four rebounds.

David Kearney led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. He also contributed defensively with two blocks and three steals, while pulling down 11 rebounds. Ashenafi Stuart added 15 points, hitting 6-of-12 shots, including two from beyond the arc, and grabbed four rebounds.

Bruce Black chipped in 13 points, making 6-of-9 field goals, and added two assists. Ryan Shaffer rounded out the top performers with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while also recording five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Haverford opened strong as Christian Uremovich scored on a jumper and a layup before Gaven Marr's three-pointer at 16:31 helped the Fords open a 10-8 lead. Despite McDaniel keeping pace with effective free-throw shooting, the Fords' accurate shooting from beyond the arc proved pivotal. Coleman extended the lead with consecutive three-pointers at 8:55 and 7:20 as Haverford's advantage reached 35-24. Seemingly in full command at that point, the Fords struggled to fend off a McDaniel rally. Kearney knocked down a triple with just under 90 seconds remaining, trimming Haverford's lead to two at 39-37. The Fords entered halftime ahead 42-39, as Marr converted a basket before Strong-Jacobson connected at the free-throw line.

The Fords fought to maintain an edge early in the second half, with Cheung Hernandez scoring consecutive layups to put the visitors ahead 46-42 at 18:09. However, McDaniel responded strongly, overtaking Haverford and building a lead the Fords struggled to cut into. Kearney put the Green Terror ahead with 15:44 to play, and the Fords did not regain the lead until the 9:32 mark, when Coleman converted a three-point play for a 56-55 advantage. A 5-0 spurt put the hosts back up four, and McDaniel eventually extended its lead to nine at 67-56 as the run reached 12-0 in favor of the Green Terror.

From there, the Fords were unable to trim the deficit below seven, as Kearney effectively sealed the outcome with a three-pointer at the 2:18 mark to make it 74-62.

Men's Basketball will return home to host a midweek matchup against Ursinus on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Tip-off on Play with Pride Night is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the contest will be the second game of a doubleheader, with the women's team facing Bryn Mawr at approximately 6 p.m.
