Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short at Washington College, 52-41

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The Haverford College women's basketball team (10-14, 2-12 CC) dropped a 52-41 decision to Washington College (12-12, 7-7 CC) on Wednesday evening at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium on the campus of Washington.

The Fords recorded 12 steals and forced 17 Shorewomen turnovers, but shot 13-of-54 (24.1 percent) from the field and 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) from three-point range. Washington shot 34.6 percent overall (18-of-52) and held a 41-36 edge on the glass, including a 28-10 advantage in points in the paint to escape with the home win.

Brianna Feifer paced Haverford with 12 points, going 5-of-6 at the free-throw line while adding seven rebounds and three steals in 37 minutes. Audrey Jakway contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals in another well-rounded performance for the junior. Caroline Orza totaled six points and a team-high eight rebounds with two steals. Bri Heafey added six points and six rebounds, while Shae Mercer finished with three assists and a steal.

Kaitlyn Boggs led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 6-of-7 from the line, while collecting 13 rebounds (five offensive) and three blocks. Abby Meredith added 15 points, including 4-of-4 at the stripe. Emma Robinson contributed four points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals across 40 minutes.

Haverford opened the scoring on a Feifer three-pointer at the 9:24 mark of the first quarter and led 9-6 after a jumper from Feifer midway through the period. Washington responded late in the quarter, taking a 12-11 edge into the second despite Orza pouring in a jumper with just 46 seconds left in the frame.

The Shorewomen extended their lead in the second, outscoring Haverford 13-6. A layup from Boggs at 7:34 pushed the margin to three, and Meredith's three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining gave Washington a 25-17 advantage at halftime. Haverford was limited to just 1-of-10 shooting in the quarter.

Both teams scored nine points in the third. Free throws from Feifer and a jumper from Jakway trimmed the deficit to four at 21-25, but Washington maintained control heading into the last stanza. A three-point play from Boggs in the final three minutes helped the hosts carry a 34-26 lead into the fourth.

Haverford made a push early in the final period. A fast-break jumper from Mercer and two Jakway free throws cut the deficit to 34-30 with 7:59 remaining. Washington answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a Boggs layup, to push the lead back to 10 in the waning moments.  The Fords trimmed the margin back to eight on multiple occasions, including at 39-47 following a Jakway layup with 1:46 to play, but Washington sealed the game at the free-throw line to complete the sweep of the season series from the Fords.

Haverford returns home on Saturday, February 21, hosting Swarthmore in Hood Trophy rivalry action at 1 p.m. inside Gooding '84 Arena for Senior Day. Prior to tip-off, Haverford will honor seniors Caroline Orza and Brianna Feifer.
