GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Haverford College women's basketball (10-13, 2-11 CC) team dropped an 89-59 decision to Gettysburg (17-6, 10-2 CC) on Saturday afternoon inside Bream Gymnasium. The Fords trailed by just one after the opening quarter, but the Bullets used a decisive second period to pull away. The Scarlet and Black recorded six blocks and seven steals, but Gettysburg controlled the interior, scoring 54 points in the paint and holding a 53-36 rebounding advantage.
Audrey Jakway paced Haverford with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Caroline Orza added 12 points and two blocks, while Bri Heafey chipped in 11 points, going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Shae Mercer contributed eight points and three steals.
Amanda Rapel led the hosts with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including three from beyond the arc. Sarah Bertolette was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds. Sasha Brody added 10 points, three assists, and two steals, while Amelia Moore grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. Briana Robles distributed a team-high five assists.
Haverford battled evenly with Gettysburg in the opening quarter, as the teams traded baskets throughout a tightly contested frame. Jakway opened the scoring and later knocked down a three-pointer, while Mercer's fast-break layup briefly gave the Fords a 21-20 edge. However, the Bullets answered in the closing seconds to take a narrow 22-21 lead into the second. Both teams scored 10 points in the paint during the period.
The hosts seized control in the second quarter, outscoring the Scarlet and Black 24-13 to build a 46-34 halftime advantage. Gettysburg capitalized on transition opportunities and turnovers, highlighted by Rapel's three-pointer in the final seconds of the half. Orza tried to keep Haverford within striking distance with a three-pointer and a late layup, but the Bullets' efficient shooting and strong defensive rebounding created separation.
Gettysburg continued to extend its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Fords 26-17. Reagan Chrencik opened the period with a layup, and although Heafey answered with a three-pointer, the Bullets maintained momentum through consistent interior scoring. Jakway added a jumper and another three-pointer for Haverford, but the hosts dominated the paint with 22 points in the quarter and carried a 72-51 lead into the final period.
In the fourth, Gettysburg closed the door by outscoring the Scarlet and Black 17-8. Standish scored early to set the tone, and the Bullets' defense limited Haverford to just three made field goals in the quarter. A three-pointer from Caitlyn Nagle and a late layup by Olivia Jones helped seal the 89-59 final.
Haverford returns to action on Wednesday, February 18, traveling to Washington College for a 6 p.m. tip in Chestertown, Md.
