Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking Overtime Loss at #14 Ursinus, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (6-6, 2-2 CC) battled back from a one-goal deficit with a dramatic fourth-quarter equalizer from Erica Pardón, but host Ursinus (8-3, 2-2 CC) found the decisive goal in overtime to escape with a 2-1 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday evening at Snell Alumnae Field.

The Fords turned in a determined defensive effort against a relentless Ursinus attack, highlighted by 11 saves from Steph Ionescu and a crucial defensive save from Pardón in overtime. Despite facing a 17-4 disadvantage in shots and a 12-2 margin in penalty corners, the Scarlet and Black remained within striking distance throughout the contest before forcing an extra period.

Ursinus established the early offensive pressure, testing Ionescu twice in quick succession during the sixth minute. The Haverford goalkeeper denied consecutive attempts from Carlyn McKendrick just six seconds apart, keeping the Bears off the scoreboard.

The Fords continued to hold firm through the remainder of the opening quarter, entering the second period locked in a scoreless tie despite being held without a shot.

Ursinus finally broke through in the 27th minute following its first penalty corner of the contest. Mady Detwiler delivered the insertion, and Marie Brainard capitalized just four seconds later, finishing the corner sequence to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Scarlet and Black continued to absorb pressure in the third quarter, with Ionescu turning away Kylie Moore in the 33rd minute before denying Brainard following another penalty corner in the 40th. Lily Gover registered Haverford's first shot of the contest in the 36th minute, but her attempt was blocked by the Ursinus defense.

The fourth quarter brought increased urgency from both sides. Morgan Reis forced Bears goalkeeper Elise Martin into a save in the 47th minute, while Brynn Bickel earned Haverford's first penalty corner moments later.

Ursinus responded with another sustained offensive push, generating six shots and six penalty corners during the final regulation period. Ionescu was particularly impressive during the closing minutes, denying Brainard in the 54th minute, Ava Mikulski in the 55th and Lauren Habakus in the 56th to keep the Fords within a goal.

With time running out, Haverford found its breakthrough.

The Scarlet and Black earned a penalty corner with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, setting the stage for a dramatic equalizer. As the ensuing play developed, the ball ricocheted around the circle before finding Pardón, who turned and fired a shot toward the cage. Her effort deflected off the pad of Martin and trickled across the goal line, leveling the contest at 1-1 with 2:49 remaining and breathing new life into the Fords' comeback bid.

Haverford nearly completed the comeback before the end of regulation. With just 33 seconds remaining, Pardón unleashed another attempt toward goal, but Ursinus defender Monica Herman came up with a critical defensive save to preserve the tie and send the contest into overtime.

The extra session brought another wave of pressure from the Bears, but Ionescu and the Haverford defense refused to surrender easily.

Ionescu stopped Brainard in the 62nd minute before Pardón came through with a defensive save just four seconds later to keep the Scarlet and Black alive. The Fords' goalkeeper followed with another stop on Brainard in the 63rd minute and denied Moore moments later as Ursinus continued to search for the winner.

The Bears eventually found the decisive breakthrough just over four minutes into overtime. Following an Ursinus penalty corner, Brainard worked the ball to Moore, who sent a shot through the legs of Ionescu and into the back of the cage at the 64:04 mark, bringing a heartbreaking end to Haverford's spirited comeback effort.

Ionescu finished with 11 saves across 64:04 of action, while Pardón accounted for two of Haverford's four shots, both on target, and added the critical overtime defensive save. Reis registered a shot on goal, while Gover contributed another attempt.

Brainard led Ursinus with eight shots, six on target, while recording a goal and an assist. Moore added the overtime winner as the Bears finished with 14 shots on goal.

Haverford returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, welcoming Gettysburg to Swan Field for a noon Centennial Conference matchup on Senior Day.
