Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day With Commanding 4-1 Victory Over Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (7-6, 3-2 CC) celebrated Senior Day in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, riding a hat trick from Erica Pardón to a 4-1 Centennial Conference victory over Gettysburg (8-3, 2-2 CC) in front of a large crowd at Swan Field.

Prior to the contest, Haverford honored its seven seniors — Brynn Bickel, Erica Pardón, Louisa Coughlin, Poppy Swallow, Lindsey Turner, Kendall Fleet and Lindsey Darby — in a special pregame ceremony, recognizing the Class of 2027 for its contributions to the field hockey program. The Scarlet and Black followed the celebration with an impressive performance on the field, combining relentless defensive pressure with a creative offensive attack to secure an important conference victory.

Pardón delivered her first collegiate hat trick, including the game-winning goal, while Morgan Reis added Haverford's fourth tally. The three-goal performance marked the second hat trick by a Ford this season, following Reis' three-goal outing against Alvernia on Sept. 12.

Haverford dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, finishing with an 18-8 advantage in shots and an 11-7 edge in attempts on goal. The Fords also earned seven penalty corners while limiting Gettysburg to just three, all of which came in the fourth quarter.

The Scarlet and Black immediately established themselves in the attacking third. Pardón sent an early attempt wide in the third minute before Louisa Coughlin forced Gettysburg goalkeeper Ava Spear into a save following a penalty corner in the fifth.

Haverford's sustained pressure soon produced a flurry of opportunities. Pardón and Poppy Swallow forced consecutive saves from Spear just two seconds apart in the seventh minute, with Swallow following with a blocked attempt as the Fords continued to press on.

The breakthrough arrived at the 7:13 mark following another Haverford penalty corner. Carolina Sanchez provided the setup for Pardón, who converted her seventh goal of the season to give the Scarlet and Black a 1-0 advantage.

Gettysburg briefly threatened to answer, but Lindsey Darby turned away Sydney Yaw less than 30 seconds after the opening goal. The Bullets earned a penalty corner on the ensuing sequence, but Lauren Rudick's attempt was blocked as Haverford's defense quickly reestablished control.

The Fords carried their momentum into the second quarter, doubling the advantage less than three minutes into the period. Alice Stein connected with Pardón, who finished her second goal of the afternoon at 17:28 to push the Scarlet and Black ahead 2-0.

Haverford continued to dominate possession and limit Gettysburg's opportunities to advance into the attacking third. The Bullets were held without a shot throughout the second quarter, while the Fords continued to create chances through patient buildup and pressure around the cage.

Pardón nearly added another goal in the 23rd minute, but Spear came up with a save following a Haverford penalty corner.

The Scarlet and Black struck again in the final minute before halftime. Following a penalty corner in the 30th minute, Coughlin forced another save from Spear, but Haverford kept the attacking sequence alive. Norah Block connected with Reis, who finished the opportunity at 29:19 to extend the lead to 3-0 heading into the break.

The Fords wasted little time adding to their advantage after the intermission. Just 3:53 into the third quarter, Lily Gover set up Pardón for her third goal of the afternoon, completing the senior's first collegiate hat trick and stretching the Haverford lead to 4-0.

Pardón's third tally brought her season total to nine goals, while the Fords continued to generate opportunities against the Gettysburg defense. Gover narrowly missed in the 35th minute before forcing a save from Spear moments later.

Haverford continued to attack through the middle stages of the third quarter, with Pardón seeing another attempt blocked before testing Spear again following a penalty corner in the 37th minute. Coughlin added a blocked shot off another corner in the 44th as the Scarlet and Black maintained their four-goal cushion.

Gettysburg mounted its most sustained attacking pressure in the fourth quarter, generating five of its eight shots and all three of its penalty corners during the final 15 minutes. Darby, who returned to the cage after Steph Ionescu handled the middle two quarters, turned away Cianna Miranda in the 49th minute before making consecutive stops against Jillian Somers and Margaret-Ann Graves following Gettysburg penalty corners in the 54th.

The Bullets eventually broke through at the 54:00 mark, as Sloane Witkowski set up Allie McCaffrey for Gettysburg's lone goal of the afternoon, trimming the deficit to 4-1.

Haverford remained composed over the closing minutes, with Gover sending a final offensive attempt wide in the 57th minute. Darby made one final save against Graves with less than a minute remaining, securing the three-goal Senior Day victory.

Pardón led all players with eight shots, putting six on goal while accounting for three of Haverford's four tallies. Coughlin added four attempts, including two on target, while Gover contributed three shots and an assist. Swallow also recorded two shots, while Sanchez, Stein and Block each registered an assist.

Darby finished with five saves across 30 minutes of action, while Ionescu added one stop in her 30 minutes between the posts. Spear made seven saves for Gettysburg before Langley Benson took over for the fourth quarter.

The victory improved Haverford to 3-2 in Centennial Conference play, giving the Fords another important result as the conference schedule moves into its second half.

Haverford returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 14, welcoming Washington College to Swan Field for a 7 p.m. Centennial Conference matchup under the lights. The contest will be Haverford's annual Think Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education.
